Star: U.S. American Legion Died of pneumonia in a hospital in France near the end of World War I, age 30 years 22 November 1918, Audubon Advocate, Audubon, Iowa, USA OBITUARY: Louis Blohm, son of Joe and Frederika Blohm was born in Audubon county, Iowa, August 28, 1888 and died in a military hospital in France on Saturday, November 2, 1918, age 30 years, two months and five days. He was in the selective draft and joined his country's colors going first to Jefferson barracks Missouri, leaving Audubon for the camp on May 13, 1918. After only three days, he was transferred to Camp MacArthur, Waco, Texas. Later he was transferred to Camp Merritt, New Jersey, where he remained until he sailed for France about August 1st. His relatives received their first letter from overseas early in September. Later they received a letter from him stating that he had been wounded in action on September 26th. The last letter received from him he had written on October 17th which stated that he was getting along as well as could be. No further message came until on Wednesday night, November 20th they received by telegram from the war department the sad intelligence that he had died of pneumonia in France on the date mentioned above. He had spent his boyhood at the parental home. After becoming of age, he had spent several years as a farm hand. Later he took up farming for himself, cultivating lands near the town of Audubon. He was generally known, loved and respected by the people of this community and while we all recognize his brave service for his country, yet he is mourned by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Methodist church Sunday morning at 11:00 o'clock. 26 November 1918, Audubon Advocate: MEMORIAL SERVICE: Sunday morning at the regular hour 11:00 o'clock memorial services were held at the Methodist church in honor of Louis Blohm. Readers of the Advocate will remember having read the account of his death in last week's paper and also the announcement that the services would be held Sunday. The services were largely attended, church being well filled. Rev. C.W. Proctor delivered the memorial sermon. Congressman W.R. Green was present and also delivered a short address. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Blohm, parents of Louis Blohm, and also to the brothers and sisters who live here. Louis was a very industrious and very highly respected young man. His friends were very numerous. Note: Charley Blohm came from Yuma, Colorado for the funeral.
