Highland Recorder October 26, 1917 W.A. BEVERAGE DEAD: WILLIAM. A. Beverage, one of Highland's well known citizens and a Confederate veteran, died last Sunday morning at the Western State Hospital in Staunton, and his body was brought home for interment in the Monterey cemetery on Monday. Mr. Beverage was partially paralyzed in August while assisting at light work in the hay-harvest, the stroke affecting one entire side and dethroning his reason. After a few weeks, he was taken to the W.S.H. for treatment, but he grew weaker from day to day, passing away Sunday, as stated above. Mr. Beverage was born in May, 1844, and was therefore in his 74th year. In 1871, he married Miss Virginia Trimble, by whom he is survived. There are five living children born to their union, four sons and one daughter. They are I.L. Beverage, of Monterey, Coe and Edward C., of Pocahontas, Byron W., living at the old home south of town, and Mrs. Bessie Showalter, of Warm Springs. All were present at their father's funeral. Deceased was a consistent member of the M. E. Church, South, having joined at the early age of 16. During all the years that followed he showed a zeal and interest that evidenced deep sincerity. Until enfeebled by age, his place in the public service. Sabbath school and week-day prayer meeting was seldom vacant, his faithfulness proving an inspiration to many who, perhaps, would otherwise have become careless and negligent of duty. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.C. Thrasher, and there was a large attendance. His four sons, named above, together with two nephews, Kenneth and Boyd Beverage, were the active pall-bearers, five or six of his war comrades were present as honorary pall bearers, he having shared their hardships for nearly two years as a member of Company D., 62nd Virginia.
