Description	:	Rachel M. Hoth, 97, died Sunday, September 16, 2018, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born December 8, 1920, the daughter of Lloyd and Mathilde (Mueller) Brownson in rural National, Iowa. Rachel grew up on the family farm that was homesteaded by her great-grandfather in 1849. Hoth, 97, died Sunday, September 16, 2018, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born December 8, 1920, the daughter of Lloyd and Mathilde (Mueller) Brownson in rural National, Iowa. Rachel grew up on the family farm that was homesteaded by her great-grandfather in 1849. In 2007, she received a plaque from the State of Iowa that the farm has been in the same family for over 160 years. Rachel received her elementary at the National Independent rural school and was third highest in the County after taking the 8th grade examination. She graduated from Garnavillo High School. The family attended church and Sunday school at St. Peter’s Lutheran at National until the church disbanded; their membership was transferred to St. Peter in Garnavillo. She took an active part in church activities, especially teaching Sunday school. She was a member of the Happy Hustler’s4-H Club. One year she and her partner placed first in the County demonstration and was awarded a trip to state fair; also that same day she was selected as county health girl, but since she and her partner were selected to go the state fair, the award was given to runner up. Rachel attended Wartburg College where she received her standard elementary teaching certificate. She taught lower elementary at the Lutheran Homes in Muscatine. She attended summer school at Teachers College at Cedar Falls and taught grades 4 and 5 at Monona Elementary School. On August 28, 1945, she was married to Harold Hoth at St. Paul Lutheran in Monona, as her home church in Garnavillo had burned down in March, 1945. Three children were born to this union, Douglas, Steven and Susan. Later she attended summer school at Upper Iowa for more credits and taught graded 4 and 5 at MFL. It was a joy to her to see children learn. She grew a large vegetable garden, froze numerous items, she did much tractor work in the field, helping to put the crops in and taking them out. She enjoyed exhibiting at the County Fair for many years in the baking department, fresh vegetables, and in antique department. Rachel is survived by her sons, Douglas, Mantica, CA, and Steven, (Alice), Dubuque; grandson, Daniel (Dawn Perry) Hoth; greatgrandchildren, Dominick and Derek Haas and Macaylah Hoth; numerous nieces and nephews who she thoroughly enjoyed when they visited her on the farm. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold and daughter, Susan. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the South Wing of the Guttenberg Care Center for their kindness and care of Rachel. They also wish to thank the Cornerstone Family Practice and St. Croix Hospice. Visitation: Thursday, September 20, 2018 – Noon until 2:00 pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Funeral: Thursday, September 20, 2018 – 2:00 pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, Iowa with Rev. Hillary Burns Kite officiating. Interment: National Cemetery, National, Iowa The Family suggests that memorials be made in Rachel’s memory to St. Croix Hospice. Leonard-Grau Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Elkader, Iowa is assisting the family.
