Ralph Eugene Softley was born to Ernest Frederick Softley and Sara Lousie Kleinschmidt Softley on May 29, 1926. He passed away May 25, 1994 at his home near Fairmont, after an extended battle with cancer, at the age of 67 years, 11 months, and 26 days. He was one of three in the family. Ralph was baptized at the Grafton Congregational Church, and later became a member of the Methodist Church in Fairmont. He attended elementary school in Grafton and high school at Fairmont, graduating with the Class of 1943. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan one semester, before being drafted into the U.S. Army in January of 1945, at the age of 18. While in the service, he was awarded the Expert Infantryman badge for his proficiency in weapons, tactic, physical condition and leadership, at the training center at Camp Fannen. He was married to Doris Bobbitt on June 5, 1949, and to them five children were born. Ralph was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He took pride in working with and alongside of his children in their growing up years. Farming was his business. Some said he had the straightest corn rows in the county. He was an avid reader, and kept up with all the new techniques. He liked raising cattle and always kept a sizable heard as a side line to farming. Ralph was preceded in death by a son, Gary Alan, at the age of 3 1/2; his father, a grandson, Jackson Softley, at the age of 18 days; mother-in-law Irene Bobbitt, two nephews, Robert Cartwright and Doug Worthington; brothers-in-law, Clarence Carlson and Fred Worthington; sisters-in-law Rosalyn (Leineger) Bobbitt, and Berniece Bobbit Pletner. Surviving are his wife Doris; sons Danny (Arlene); Jack (Vicki); Bill (Joan); daughter Linda (Don) Bristol; 8 grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy *Herb) Kauhl and Muriel(Rolan) Anderson; brothers-in-law Ralph bobbitt, and Joel Pletner, sisters-in-law, Frances (Owen) Cartwright, winona Worthington, and Margaret Carlson; and lots of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church on Saturday, May 28, with Rev. Tony Woodward and Rev. Herb Kauhl officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied a quartet of Don and Judy West, Delores Swartz and Ron Isley, who sang "We Gather Together", "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross." The Nebraska Signal June 1994.
