Sarah Louise Kleinschmidt Softley, age 92 years, 10 months, and 16 days, a native of the Grafton and Fairmont areas, died at the Fillmore Co. Hospital in Geneva July 2, 1994. She was born August 16,1901, on a farm northwest of Grafton, one of seven children of Julius and Anna Salmen Kleinschmidt. She attended the former Dist. 29 school and graduated from Grafton High School in 1919-75 years ago. From 1919 to 1922 , she was a rural school teacher. On August 23, 1922, she was united in marriage to Ernest Frederick Softley, who died April 29, 1977. They lived on farms in the Grafton and Fairmont communities until they retired to Fairmont in 1974. Softley joined the Grafton Congregational Church on Easter in 1917. In December of 1953, she transferred her membership to the Grace Methodist Church in Fairmont, which became the Fairmont Community church. She belonged to the former Women's Society of Christian Service, receiving a Life Membership pin in 1961. She received the Dedicated Light honor for 30 years of missionary support in August of 1988. She was a charter member of the West Blue Extension Club when it was organized in 1925, and remained a member for 57 years. She had a lively interest in her family and wrote many interesting letters to many family members through the years. She attended each of the annual Selmen family reunions from the first one in 1925, through 1990. She was an industrious homemaker, especially enjoying her gardening and sharing her harvest. She kept a day-to-day diary for nearly 50 years. She is survived by 2 daughters Dorothy (Herbert) Kauhl; and Muriel (Rolan) Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Doris Softley; a sister Mabel Kleinschmidt; eight grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Ralph; three sisters; two brothers; a grandson and a great-grandson. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church on Tuesday, July 5, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Tony Woodward officiating. Nancy Jo Gaulusha accompanied the congregation who sang "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise" and "O God, Our Help in Ages Past." Casket bearers were Don Bristol, Kay Kleinschmidt, Kurt Kleinschmidt, Bill Softley, Dan Softley, and Jack Softley. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal July 1994.
