Ralph Henry Keil was born to William Henry and Josephine (Schriener) Keil on Aug. 5, 1911, at the family farm home, five miles northwest of Exeter. He passed away at the York General Hospital, York, on Sept.15, 1998, at the age of 87 years, 1 month, and 9 days. He was the second of three children in the family. Ralph was baptized as an infant by Pastor William Ellwood at the Congregational Church in Fairmont on June 23, 1912. He attended country school at District No. 27, near the family farm, through the eight grade, and then graduated from Fairmont High School in 1930. He always enjoyed telling he was on Fairmont's first football team when he was a freshman and lettered all four years. As a young man growing into adulthood, he helped his father on the farm. After high school graduation, Ralph continued farming. He was united in marriage to his neighbor girl, Clara Cudaback at the Fairmont Parsonage on Oct. 12, 1932. To this union one child, Charlene Lauree, was born. Ralph and Clara lived on a farm northeast of Fairmont. Their love of the farm life was evidenced by the hours of hard work put into farming the land and caring for the livestock. During the depression, he traveled a couple years in the fall with some harvest crews to Iowa to help pick corn by hand. It was at a time of big changes from horses to that first tractor, electricity, and an irrigation well on the farm. Ralph sold DeKalb Seed for a number of years while he was farming. This was very interesting to him as hybrid seed corn was just being developed. Many friendships were made. Almost every year in the summer, after a bountiful rain and before harvest, he would take his family on a vacation, having traveled to nearly every state. Ralph served on many boards throughout the years; church, school, elevator, and township. He served as Fillmore County Supervisor for Fairmont and Madison townships from 1971 to 1980. Ralph built a new home in Fairmont in 1973, at which time they retired from farming. He spent his leisure hours visiting his neighbors in his shop while working with wood. His family and friends were beneficiaries of many beautiful pieces of woodworking. His spinning wheel and grandfather clock were among some of his proudest achievements. Ralph and Clara celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1982. His wife Clara passed away March 14, 1987. After spending four years alone, Ralph was united in marriage to a lifelong friend, Helen (Deffenbaugh) Ronne of York, at the First United Methodist Church in York, on Feb. 9, 1991. Ralph and Helen moved to an apartment in York at that time. They both found new joys in each others families. They spent some winters in Texas and took various vacations together. Ralph was a person that had to keep busy, so he still found time to do some woodworking. Ralph had been a lifelong member of the Fairmont Community Church until he transferred his membership to the First United Methodist Church in York, April 21, 1991. He had been a member there since. He also joined the Exeter IOOF Lodge at the age of 18 years and then transferred to the Fairmont IOOF. He had achieved the position of deputy grand master. He had been a member for 68 years. He also was a member of the Fairmont Masonic Lodge a number of years. Ralph enjoyed life to the fullest, and will be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Josephine; his first wife Clara; and brother-in-law Kenneth Perkins. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Helen; daughter Charlene Bristol and her husband David; stepson, Max Ronne and wife Karla; grandchildren, Debra Adelman and husband Jeff; Don Bristol and wife Linda, Julie Bristol, and Keith Bristol; step-grandchildren Greg Ronne; Marc Ronne and wife Judy; Ross Ronne and wife Michelle; great-grandchildren, Kenny, Kyle, Clinton, and Clarissa Adelman; Shane, Angela, and Brady Bristol; step-great-grandchildren, Chasity, Alicia, and Derek Ronne' and Breanne and Evan Ronne; two sisters, Erma Perkins and Ruby Real and husband Everett; brother-in-law, Clarence Cudaback and wife Agnes; sister-in-law, Isabelle Leybold; along with nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the First United Methodist Church in York at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 16, 1998, with Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Barb Crowe accompanied Dale McNeill, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Casket bearers were Don Bristol, Keith Bristol, Jeff Adelman, Greg Ronne, Marc Ronne and Ross Ronne. Honorary bearers were Deb Adelman and Julie Bristol. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal September 23, 1998 page 11.
