Rebecca Brown was born in the state of Tennessee, July 24, 1829. From Tennessee the family removed first to Indiana in 1831 and next from Indiana to Henry County in 1839. Thus the family was among the early pioneers of this part of Iowa. They settled first in New London township and from this home Rebecca was married to Charles J. Leedham, June 17, 1849. To this couple have been born ten children, the two oldest died in infancy and two beloved sons have since died, just as they were entering manhood and usefulness, John D. died Dec. 6, 1878 and George F. died Nov. 9, 1899. The husband and father died Jan. 30, 1890. The six children now living all reside in this city. The four daughters, Linnetta, Josephine, Anna and Agnes, lived with the mother at the home and in her declining years gave to her always the most loving care and attention. Albert E. and Charles G. are well known, esteemed citizens in our midst having homes of their own. For forty-five years the family home has been in this city. The mother, Mrs. Leedham, united with the Universalist church, March 28, 1866 and has always proved an earnest, faithful and helpful member of this organization. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from the residence, which was filled with relatives, neighbors and friends. Dr. L.B. Fisher, president of Lombard University, Galesburg, officiating, assisted by Rev. W.R. Cole, and old time friend of the family. The singing, most beautiful and appropriate, was by a male quartet; Dr. Geo. T. Mason, Dr. L.B. Allen, Messrs. O.M. Drummond and J.D. Lehew. The pall bearers were L.F. Willard, J.R. Willis, F.G. Wait, Henry Bowman, Gus Jericho, and J.A. Throop. The interment was in the family lot in Forest Home cemetery. Thus has passed from our Midst another of our Henry county pioneers.
