Callam was born on the farm three miles southeast of Pawnee City on April 23rd, 1903 and departed this life June 21st, 1979 at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 29 days. When a small boy he moved with his parents to their home one mile north of DuBois, Ne. Here he grew to manhood receiving his schooling in the DuBois Public School and attending Sunday School at the Methodist Church. In the spring of 1928 he moved with his father and sister to the farm six miles south of Pawnee City. On October 21st, 1928 he was united in marriage with Vera Slater. To this union four children were born. Reuben spent his entire life farming. He loved working with animals and he also enjoyed all sports. He took an active part in his community. He and his family were members of the Pleasant Valley United Brethren Church. He served years on the board and sang with the Men's Quartet. He served on the Greendale School Board and several other community organizations. He was a kind and loving husband and father, always ready to lend a helping hand. In December of 1969 he suffered a stroke which left him partially disabled. In October of 1971 he moved to Pawnee City where he resided until his death. Reuben and Vera celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in October of 1978. He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife Vera; his daughter Leota Kreifel and husband George of Table Rock; his daughter Shirley Oenbring and husband Edwin of Pawnee City; his son Nathan and wife Mary of Beatrice; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; his sister Blanche Slater of Humboldt; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by: an infant daughter who died at birth; his parents; two sisters and one brother; and infant twin grandsons. Funeral services were held Monday, June 25, 1979 at 10:30 a.m. at Wherry Brothers Mortuary in Pawnee City, Ne. with Rev. t. J. Fraser officiating. Pallbearers were Roland Finkner, George Fletcher, Lloyd Matthews, Donald Rogers, Willard Thiemann and Jack Hinrichsen.
