George Lee Euting, former pastor of New Bridge Baptist Church and program director of the Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, died yesterday in a local hospital after a long illness. He was 72. Mr. Euting was a graduate of John Marshall High School, the University of Richmond and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He was ordained in the Pine Street Baptist Church in Richmond. Mr. Euting served as pastor of two churches in Texas and four in Virginia before his appointment as the first secretary of the Brotherhood Department of the Virginia Baptist General Board on May 1, 1956. In that position, he helped establish two camps for Royal Ambassadors for youths in Virginia at Camp Piankatank east of Richmond and at Peaks of Otter in Bedford County. While a pastor of Burrows Baptist Church in Norfolk, he was a counselor, camp pastor and program director with the youth group. From 1964 to 1968, he was program director of the Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention in Memphis, Tenn. He was vice president of Bluefield College in 1968-1969 and then returned to the Southern Baptist Convention as coordinator of Promotion Planning for the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tenn. In 1974 Mr. Euting was named pastor of New Bridge Baptist Church. He served there until 1987, when he formed Truth and Life Ministries Inc. and began a full-time evangelistic ministry. He held crusades and revivals throughout Virginia and in Pennsylvania, Nevada and California. In addition, he assisted many small churches without pastors. From 1963 until his death Mr. Euting served as chaplain, consultant and counselor for the English Construction Co. in Altavista. In 1986, he was president of the Virginia Baptist Pastors Conference. He was a member and chairman of many committees for the Richmond Baptist Association. He was a trustee of Richmond Memorial Hospital from 1979 to 1985 and worked to establish the Laburnum Medical Center in eastern Henrico County. Mr. Euting was a member of the board of trustees of the Henrico County Public Library from 1977 to 1987 and served as chairman in 1987. He was a member and past president of the Sandston Rotary Club. From 1987 to 1990 he served on the Community Corrections Resources Board for Henrico County. Mr. Euting was a member and recent chairman of the Energyshare Committee of Virginia Power. He was the author of "The Brotherhood Program in a Baptist Church" and "Missionary Education for Baptist Men." He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; a daughter, Carolyn Diehl of Columbus, Ohio; and a son, Lee Euting of Richmond. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Bridge Baptist Church, 5915 Nine Mile Road. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Shacklefords United Methodist Church in Plainview. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Totuskey Baptist Church Christian Education Fund or to the Westwood Transitional Education Fund.
