Mr. Beery, who was 79 years old, had been living at Deer Lodge, Mont., with his wife and daughter Evelyn. He was enroute to Columbia, with two sisters, to visit his son, Gunning Trask Beery, a student at the University of Missouri, when his automobile struck a boulder that had fallen on a mountain road. Also killed in the accident was a sister, Mrs. Elsie Ryan of Washington. The other sister, Mrs. Ethel Thurman, also of Washington, suffered undetermined injuries and was taken to a hospital at Helena. Born in Virginia in 1869, the Rev. Mr. Beery married the former Miss Rachel Trask in Montana in 1904. While they lived in Fulton, on Center street, they took active part in Methodist church activities and both were known for their fine voices. He went to Columbia 26 years ago as pastor of the Wilkes Boulevard Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at Deer Lodge Friday. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Evelyn, and Mrs. Lloyd Stickney Stark of St. Louis, and two sons, Gunning Trask Beery and Marvin Beery. Beery, 79, retired Methodist minister and Deer Lodge resident for many years, died Wednesday morning at St. John's hospital in Helena from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Monday night on Mcdonald pass which also claimed the life of his sister, Mrs. Elsie Ryan of Big Timber. The Rev. Beery, Mrs. Ryan and another sister, Mrs. Ethel Thurman of Seattle, were on their way from Deer lodge to Missouri to attend a family reunion. The Rev. Beery was driving when he apparently lost control of the car which crashed into a rock bank and then turned over in the middle of the highway, according to the highway patrolman who investigated the accident. Mrs. Thurman was reported in good condition at St. John's hospital, although she received serious injuries. The Rev. Beery suffered a neck fracture and multiple bruises and lacerations. Funeral services for Rev. Bery have been tentatively set for 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon with the Ross mortuary in charge. He was a native of Edom county, Va. and was born March 1, 1869. When a small boy, he moved with his parents to Missouri where he received his elementary education. He was graduated in 1902 from the Drew Seminary in New Jersey and his first pastorate was the Methodist church in Deer Lodge. In 1904 he was married to Rachel Margaret Trask, daughter of Mrs. Marvin Trask, pioneer residents of Montana. The Beery's moved to Virginia where he served as minister for five years. He then assumed pastorates in Missouri where he was engaged in church work until his retirement in 1936. In 1945 the Rev. and Mrs. Beery returned to Deer Lodge to make their home and since that time he has been partially active in church work in Philipsburg and Deer Lodge. Surviving, in addition to his widow, are two sons, Marvin Beery of Bay City, Tex., and Trask Beery of Columbia, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Dorcas Stark of St. Louis, Mo., and Miss Evelyn Beery of Deer Lodge; four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Thurman, Mrs. B. F. Melcher of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Mrs. Viola Frieze of Stockton, Mo., and Mrs. Jessie Lester of Springfield, Mo.; three brothers, the Rev. D. A. Beery of Roanoke, Va., the Rev. J. K. Beery of Austin, Tex., and J. W. Beery of Center, Colo., and three grandchildren -------------- DeWitt Coffman Beery and wife Anna Elizabeth Brunk had eleven children: Joseph William, Gunning Christian, Olive (a/k/a Maggie Olive or Ollie), DeWitt Aldine, Anna, Viola (Ola), John K., Ivy, Ethel, Elsie and Jesse Lee. All four brothers and their father were Methodist ministers.
