Maher, 100, of Pierre, died Friday, July 8 at Golden Living in Pierre. Her visitation will be from 5:00-7:00pm, Tuesday, July 12 at Ss. Reva was born on the farm near Hitchcock SD on January 20, 1911. She was the third of fourteen children of Herb and Mary (Payne) Marshall. Reva being one of the older siblings told many stories of helping her parents care for her younger siblings and tending to the chores on the Marshall farm. The Marshalls also ran a feed barn & livery service. Reva attended school at the Payne Country School House near Hitchcock. As a young lady Reva told of a young horseman who came to trade horses with her father, Herb. That young cowboy was William (Billy) Maher who Reva married on November 30, 1929. Reva and her husband Billy had seven children in the early years of their marriage. The young couple started out on a small ranch near Hitchcock, putting on rodeos all over SD,ND,NE & MN in places like Cottonwood Lake, Lake Kampeska, Lake Dudley, Glenwood Park near Mitchell, Huron, Aberdeen, Pierre, Hardington, NE & Brainerd, MN. Reva enjoyed sharing the stories of the ranch and rodeo life, the friendships and the history in the making of the Diamond M Rodeo Company. Reva and Billy moved to 116 South Harrison in Pierre in 1950. Reva's husband Billy died on January 31, 1959. Reva shared that she worried that without her husband she would not be able to take care their children. She often spoke of how her prayers and faith pulled her through difficult times. Reva often recalled praying to GOD to let her live long enough to see her children raised. After her husband died, Reva worked at the State House Café (often walking to work) and spent 18 additional years working for the South Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles in Pierre. Reva witnessed many advances from the horse and buggy days to the modern day computer. Reva joined the Catholic Church when she married Billy and was a faith filled example of Christian love for all. She was a loyal member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre for 61 years. She enjoyed her affiliation with the Alter Society and Catholic Daughters. Reva was never very far from her Rosary and was a devout believer and follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. Reva always found the best in everyone, was quick to encourage and was fair and generous with all. Reva was known for her pie & bread baking skills and won many county fair contests. Although she got a kick out of winning, her true enjoyment came from sharing her love of baking with her family and friends. Many a grandchild enjoyed a recycled coffee can or plastic tub full of homemade cookies as a send off for college or rodeo trips. Visitors were always welcomed with fresh baked cookies, banana cakes and the very best caramel rolls. Reva enjoyed life to the fullest in her 100 years of life. Reva was a blessing to all and has touched so many lives, that her legacy will live on forever in the hearts of all. Reva was proceeded in death by her parents Herb and Mary, her husband William(Billy) Maher, siblings Vera(Guy Woodard) Ellen (Mike LeGrande), Lawrence, Carl( Dorothy), Norma(Ray Maher), Clyde( Margie Oustad), Jesse (Cecil Houck), Marie(Bill Franklin), Lyle(Theone Tollifson), Lester(Doris Leonard), Keith (Ardella Lahren), Brother-in law Russell Schamp, an infant daughter Nellie Genevieve, daughter Donna, son- in- laws Willie &Warren Melvin, daughter- in- law Ida Belle (Smith) Maher, infant grand-daughters Marsha Melvin and Pamela Melvin. Survivors include children: Delores Melvin, Reita(Terrance) Etzkorn, William (Bill)(Jill) Maher, Thomas M. (Peggy) Maher and Theresa(Curt) Severyn; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren, a brother Glen (Maxine Taylor)-Hitchcock, a sister Lenore Schamp-Sioux Falls, numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends and neighbors. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to The Catholic Daughters or the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center.
