Although an invalid for a number of years, yet his passing to his eternal rest, is keenly felt by all his associates. In the prime of his life he exercised that ability that brought success as a farmer and stock raiser. He was a keen reader in the matter of science and research in agricultural pursuit, and was often sought out to give addresses before institutes and gatherings. He often wrote articles for the press, that were copied far and wide.The deceased was born in Somersetshire, England, on October 18, 1828 making him at his death 81 years, 3 months and 13 days. In 1850 he sailed for America, and landed in Dubuque County, when this section was in the hands of a few pioneers. In 1852 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Wall, who was also born in Somersetshire, England. Unto them were six children, William, George now deceased, Mrs. Elizabeth Baker Court, Watson and Mrs. Mary L. Frost who survive him [also Jane].When Mr. Baker landed in this country he worked out a short time and as soon as his circumstances would permit, bought the large tract of land at Johnscreek where he kept his continual residence until death. Thrift and frugality made his venture as a farmer a success.Many remincesences of those early days when he first landed in this section, have been recited in the hearing of the writer, of the difficulty it was for new comers to find where Richard Baker lived, as in those days, there was nothing but open prairie, no roads or hills to find your location. Those were the days of hardships, when the new comers were so far from their base of supplies or a market for their products. Such were the conditions, when Mr. Baker first opened his meager little home at Johnscreek.The funeral was held Monday from the little church at Johnscreek, in which he took so much interests in his days, and his remains were placed beside his wife [Fairview Cemetery] who preceeded him to that unknown world some 29 years ago. The services were held by Rev. Dr. Flemings, an intimate friend of the family. The singing was by a male quartette composed Dr. Geo. A. Gibbs, Dr. C. B. Payne, Rev. C. E.
