Description	:	ATCHISON -- Robert D. "Bob" Lykins, 79, Atchison, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at home. He was born July 27, 1922, in Denver, Missouri, to Lloyd R. and Susie Spainhower Lykins, and attended elementary school in Denver, Missouri. He was a carrier for the St. Joseph, Missouri, newspaper and Grit magazine. He moved to Atchison with his parents in 1935 and graduated from Atchison High School in 1940. He was born July 27, 1922, in Denver, Missouri, to Lloyd R. and Susie Spainhower Lykins, and attended elementary school in Denver, Missouri. He was a carrier for the St. Joseph, Missouri, newspaper and Grit magazine. He moved to Atchison with his parents in 1935 and graduated from Atchison High School in 1940. He worked for Arensberg Grocery in Atchison and later for Arensberg Brokerage. He was manager of Arensberg Grocery three years before he bought the Kasten Grocery in Atchison in 1947. He owned and operated the grocery store for 27 years. He later was a salesman for Phalen Motors in Atchison for 23 years before he retired in 1998. He was an Atchison County commissioner from 1962 to 1978. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atchison, the parish council, and Council No. 723 of Knights of Columbus. He had served as a guide at the opening of the Abbey Church in Atchison and was a volunteer for Mount St. Scholastica projects. He was a member of the Mount Calvary Cemetery board in Atchison, a charter member of the Atchison Historical Society and a former member of the Atchison Elks Lodge. He married Mary McNerny on Dec. 29, 1943. She survives. Other survivors include four sons, Dan Lykins, Topeka, and Jim Lykins, Tom Lykins and Tim Lykins, all in Atchison; three daughters, Barbara Lykins, Raytown, Missouri, Pat McKelvy, O'Fallon, Illinois, and Janey Lykins, Atchison; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atchison. Burial will be in St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in the Good Intent community northwest of Atchison. A parish and Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. today will be followed by visitation until 8:30 p.m. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home in Atchison. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Atchison Hospice or Mount St. Scholastica Academy in Atchison.
