Description	:	Robert J. E. Hayes was born in Painsville, Ohio, June 11, 1845, and died at his home Nov. 17, 1911, at the age of 66 years. At the age of ten he moved with his parents to Iowa, and served a short time in the Civil war, going in as a volunteer from Ohio. Coming to Nebraska in the year of 1872, he settled near the present site of Franklin on a pre-emption and on the following year he brought Lecetta Pearson as a bride to his lonely dugout. Hayes was born in Painsville, Ohio, June 11, 1845, and died at his home Nov. 17, 1911, at the age of 66 years. At the age of ten he moved with his parents to Iowa, and served a short time in the Civil war, going in as a volunteer from Ohio. Coming to Nebraska in the year of 1872, he settled near the present site of Franklin on a pre-emption and on the following year he brought Lecetta Pearson as a bride to his lonely dugout. Together they fed the savage Indians and chased the roaming buffaloes and endured the trials and sufferings of the awful "grasshopper year." With great anxiety they watched the railroad as it was built through their farm in '79. Through failures and prosperity the old farmhouse rang with mirth from morn till night for 12 children came to bless the union-7 daughters and 5 sons-Mary, Rosa, Daisy, Edith, Geneva, Ella, Anna, Thomas, Albert, Cleveland, James and Charles, all of whom are living except Edith, who preceded her father to the heavenly home by five years. Mr. Hayes had not been in the best of health for sometime but was not confined to his bed till a week before his death. His illness was not considered serious but he expressed a wish to see his children and they were called home. Friday noon a change came and surrounded by his relatives he passed away at 4:30 of a hemorrhage. He leaves his wife, children and one brother to mourn his death. Though he has only gone before he will be sadly missed for he was loved and respected by all. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist Church by Rev. Gilpin. The text was from Job 14:14, "If a man dies, he shall live again."
