Suits, acted as guard of honor to the flag draped casket of their comrade as it was borne to its last resting place in the Malvern cemetery. The following obituary was read: Robert Lee Hammond was born in Belmont County, Ohio, February 22, 1847 and died at Malvern, Iowa December 14, 1926. At the age of seven years he moved with his parents to Morgan County, Ohio, where he resided until his enlistment as a soldier in the Civil War February 23, 1864. He served in the Atlanta campaign and was with Sherman in his memorable "March to the Sea." He was discharged on the 11th day of August , 1865, at Little Rock, Arkansas. He returned to Chester Hill, Ohio, where he resided until he came to Iowa 53 years ago, locating in this vicinity where he has since made his home with the exception of a brief residence in Nebraska and Arkansas. He was united in marriage to Mary Hammond April 27, 1876. To this union two daughters were born, Mrs. B.C. Donner of Corvallis, Oregon, and Olive Hammond at home. Mrs. Hammond passed away April 4, 1887 and from that time on he was father and mother both to his two children and lived for them, bearing his own great sorrow with fortitude. About thirty years ago he united with the Christian church in Malvern and in .... (not legible) .... of Milton Summers Post, Grand Army of the Republic. He was a good neighbor, a kind father and a loyal, public-spirited citizen. He is survived by the two daughters, three grandchildren, his bother Richard, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends who sincerely mourn his passing. - - - Robert Hammond enlisted as a Private on Feb. 23, 1864 at the age of 18 years. He mustered in Co B 53rd Ohio Infantry on Feb. 23, 1864 and mustered out on Aug. 11, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.
