To this union were born twelve children, seven of whom survive. Mrs. Rains died Dec. 5, 1886. Mr. Rains came to Illinois Oct. 1, 1849, settling in Bell Plain Township, Marshall County, where he lived and with his faithful wife reared a large family of children, all of whom have become excellent, influential and useful men and women. On Feb. 8,. 1882, they moved to Fairfield. Since the death of his wife in 1886, Mr. Rains had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Justis, at La Rose, Ills. Father Rains was a remarkable man in many ways. First, He was a man of fine appearance and splendid form showing great strength of body and character so that at first sight you know him to be a noble man. Second, He was both able and gifted in conversation, making him a very desirable companion. Several texts have been suggested to the writer upon which to base some of his most effectual sermons while calling upon father Rains. Third, He had a wonderful memory, which with a strong mind made him very instructive, he seemed to forget nothing. Fourth, He was as clean in character and principle as it is possible for any man to be; he thoroughly hated sin, yet loved all mankind. Fifth, He was a man of clean lips and his conversation seemed ordered of God. He had been in failing health about a year, but by the most tender care from loved ones he kept up until a few days before his death he could go no longer, his heart, the seat of life, grew too weak to longer do its work, and on Saturday evening about 9 o'clock , Feb. 13, he suddenly but peacefully passed away. Father Rains from the age of eighteen has been a member of the Baptist church and a fervent practical christian. Earth loses a good and noble man and Heaven gains a great soul. He leaves behind seven sons: John Waller, Benjamin T., Robert J., James Wm., Columbus D. M., Andrew L., and Charles L., and five daughters: Susan L., Mary E., Caroline G., Sarah E., Sophia Bell, Besides 44 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Farewell good man of noble birth, You've left the rituals and cares of earth, But in the hearts of those below, Your noble influence still shall grow. Your form lies silent, cold and still, Your precious dust the grave shall fill, But in the realms of light above, Your soul delights in perfect love. The above was written by Rev. W. F. Dudman, pastor of the M. E. church La Rose, Ill., who conducted services at the home of Mrs. Justis. The services were held at the home of B. T. Rains, conducted by Rev. Miller, of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. Osborne, of the M. E. church. The pall bearers were: H. W. Stoner, W. A. Warwick, Frank Light, M. W. Roth, Robt, Israel W, B. Murray.
