Roe Wesley Gifford Jr. was born on May 28, 1927 in Sewell, Chile to Roe Wesley Gifford Sr. and Winifred Scott Gifford. Roe lived in Chile for the first four years of his life until the accidental death of his father who was a mining engineer at the Braden Copper Mine. Roe's mother brought him and his little sister to the United States by ship. They lived in Pierre so that they could be close to his grandmother, Alice Gifford. During his youth he enjoyed delivering "The Reminder" and also carried an Argus Leader route. Roe received a Certificate of Achievement from Pierre High School as he went in to boot camp at the end of his junior year. He served on the LST-762 as a Naval 3rd Class Electrician Mate and was in the Reserves for nine years. He served toward the end of World War II and into the Korean War at which time he was called back into active duty and was stationed in Japan. Following his tour of duty, he attended college for two semesters at Northern and completed his studies at Augustana, graduating in 1950. He taught school and coached for five years at Bonilla, Lebanon, Ramona, Highmore and Harrold. He then went to work as a distribution clerk at the Pierre Post Office where he was employed for thirty years. Roe married Gladys Jones and they lived their lives to the fullest. They were great supporters of the Pierre Governors and the Pittsburgh Pirates. They took many baseball trips to see them play. Not only was he an avid sports fan, he was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, VFW, and DAV and held many offices. He and his wife traveled by car to many state and national conventions. He was a stamp-collector and enjoyed bowling and fishing. Roe is survived by Jeraldyne "Ottum" Anderson (Merlin) from Inver Grove, MN, Jeanette "Jan" "Ottum" Enright, Pierre, Michelle "Ottum" White (Phil), Sioux Falls, and brother-in-law Lyle Wendling, Napa, CA; numerous nieces and nephews; and step-children Carol (Larry) Klinger, Pierre and Howard (Bud) Jones, Sioux Falls. Roe was preceded in death by his father, Roe Wesley Gifford, Sr., his mother, Winifred Gifford Ottum, his step-father, Jerome Ottum, his wife Gladys Gifford, grandmother Alice Gifford, step-grandparents, Carl & Julia Ottum, his sister, Alice Wendling, infant nephew Michael Wharton and several aunts and uncles. source- http://www.feigumfh.com 3/16/11
