Description	:	Rosella Lydia Martin, the daughter of Fredrick and Katherine (Grummert) Hornbussel, was born on June 16, 1927 on a farm north of Superior, Nebraska. She passed away on March 17, 2005 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska after a brief battle with cancer, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 1 day. Read More	Rosella Lydia Martin, the daughter of Fredrick and Katherine (Grummert) Hornbussel, was born on June 16, 1927 on a farm north of Superior, Nebraska. She passed away on March 17, 2005 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska after a brief battle with cancer, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 1 day. Her father was a German immigrant and mother was a first generation American born of German parents. Rosella was the youngest of eight children and a life long resident of Superior area. She grew up on her family farm, attending school by walking to the rural one room school house about ½ mile away and later attending Superior High School. She talked often of walking to her cousins home on the north side of the farm and of playing in the hayloft in the barn. Her family attended Salem Lutheran Church. Rosella had fond memories of cooking and baking with her mother. She told of setting the table on Christmas Eve -- each child hoping their plate at the table would have a gift on Christmas morning. Usually shoes or something of necessity, rather than a toy. Still living at home she recalled the helplessness she felt when seeing the Western Union messenger walk up their long, snow drifted drive way with the sad news that yet another brother had been killed during battle in World War II. Rosella married Emery Martin on July 7, 1957 at Salem Lutheran Church. They made their home in Superior with children Ann, Tammy and Tony. When the children grew older, she started working at the Good Samaritan Home in Superior where she remained for approximately 20 years until her retirement. At Christmas time she prepared fudges and caramel and peanut brittle. The grandkids always looked forward to her bringing an ice cream bucket full of homemade ginger snaps or oatmeal cookies. Rosella was great at remembering birthdays, wedding anniversaries and events which were long forgotten by many. If you ever asked her "do you remember", she usually always did. She had a knack for finding the lost items, even at her children's houses. Rosella was often teased by her children for her frugalness. She was proud that she still had and used the first Maytag automatic washer she purchased in the early 70's. Each child and grandchild and many friends have one of Rosella's afghans. She loved to crochet and do some embroidery. A true animal lover, which she passed on to her children, she always had a house dog and would often "baby-sit" for her children's pets. Her dog, Missy, was her best friend and they enjoyed walking every morning. She enjoyed bird watching and feeding the squirrels. Country music was her passion. Most importantly she enjoyed just being with family. When her children married, their spouses became family and were loved equally and unconditionally. She spent many years caring for the Johnson grandkids while their parents worked and helped Marc deliver newspapers. She visited the Vasa's farm frequently, caring for McCain in the hospital when he broke his leg. She preferred Case and Jayden visit grandma together, as she enjoyed that they got along so well. She was proud that Kelsey enlisted in the national guard, but did not hide her worry. Rosella's real job was caring for other people. Whether it was her husband, children, relative or friend, Rosella was always relied on to patiently sit with them, help them, drive to appointments or just provide company and comfort. And she did so graciously and willingly as if it were her calling. She was generous with her love. For that she will be remembered and cherished. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, Emery, granddaughter, April Johnson, three sisters: Erna Schiermeyer, Lenore Bruce, Dorothea Rogers; three brothers, Frederick, George and Edwin Hornbussel. She is survived by her children; daughters and son-in-laws, Ann and Tom Johnson of Superior, Tammy & John Vasa of Weston, Nebraska and son, Tony Martin of South Dakota. Her grandchildren; Kelsey & Marcus Johnson, McCain and Case Vasa, and Jayden Martin and Jayden's mother, Tiffany. Step-sons, Wayne & Duane Martin of Australia and their families. Her sister, Pauline Knott of Omaha. Many brother- and sister-in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 2:00 PM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska with Rev. Evelyn Phillips and Irvin Schleufer, PMA officiating. Music was "On Eagles Wings" "How Great Thou Art" and " I Can Only Imagine"- recorded music with Alicia Ferguson as soloist and Carlita Erickson as organist. Pallbearers were Tom Johnson, John Vasa, Marcus Johnson, Alan Hornbussel, Gordon Schiermeyer, and Randy Baker. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska was in charge of the arrangements.
