Description	:	Rosena was born April 28, 1859 in Rock Island, Illinois, the daughter of Johann Christian "J.C." Jensen and Elizabeth Peters (or Petersen) Jensen. J.C. was born December 3, 1833 in Schleswig, Germany and died June 6, 1904 in Schleswig, Iowa. Elizabeth was born November 6, 1833 in Mecklenburg, Germany and died November 29, 1916 in Schleswig, Iowa. J.C. was born December 3, 1833 in Schleswig, Germany and died June 6, 1904 in Schleswig, Iowa. Elizabeth was born November 6, 1833 in Mecklenburg, Germany and died November 29, 1916 in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple was married May 2, 1856 in Edgington Township, Rock Island County, Illinois, where J.C. was a blacksmith. They moved to Scott County, Iowa about 1860 and farmed for a while. The Civil War broke out in April 1861. The family then moved to Hall County, Nebraska about 1863 where Jacob was born in December of 1864. When Jacob was about one year old, perhaps in the spring of 1866, the family moved back to Scott County, Iowa. The Civil War ended in 1865. In 1874, the Jensen family moved to Crawford County, Iowa. On July 7, 1875, Rosena married George Bottjen, the hired man. The Crawford County Marriage Records (see familysearch.org) list her husband as "Geo Butcher". Her own name is badly transcribed as "Lena Gens...". She was often referred to as Sena or Cena in census records. The writing must have difficult to transcribe, as the transcriber wrote "Gens..." for "Jensen". The location on the marriage record simply says "Crawford, Iowa, United States", so we don't know if the wedding was held in a courthouse, in a church or at the bride's home. They had 10 children all of whom lived to maturity except baby Rose who lived a few months in 1880 and is buried in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. The children are: Albert, Chris, Rose, Elizabeth, George, Rosena, William, Caroline, Gustav and Reinhold. Her husband, George, died February 17, 1899, at age 51, and is buried in Morgan Cemetery. Rosena was only 39 years old and her youngest child was three. On February 11, 1904, she married John Peters. In the 1905 Iowa Census they are living in Otter Creek Township in Crawford County. Rosena was baptized and confrmed as an adult in 1908 in Friedens Ev. Lutheran Church, in Schleswig, along with several Jensen family members. In the 1910 U.S. Census and 1915 Iowa Census, Rosena and John are living in Morgan Township of Woodbury County. In the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses, they are living in the town of Battle Creek, Maple Township, Ida County where they remained. Rosena died March 24, 1936 and is buried next to George and baby Rose in the Morgan Township Cemetery near Schleswig. Her obituary: April 2, 1936 Ida County Pioneer Mrs. Johannes Peters Mrs. Johannes Peters, 76, dead of a lingering illness Tuesday evening, March 24, at her home in South Battle Creek, where she had lived for twenty years. Final rites were held Friday afternoon, March 27, at 1 o'clock in the Presbyterian church with Rev. C.E. Fausnaugh officiating. Mrs. J.J. Schmidt, Mrs. Mary Hall, H.M. Schmidt and Rev. Fausnaugh sang the songs, "The Old Rugged Cross" "Going Down the Valley" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." Her six sons were pallbearers. Burial was made in the Schleswig cemetery. Rosena Maria Jensen was born April 28, 1859, near Rock Island, Ill. When but a few years old she accompanied her parents in a covered wagon to Nebraska, where they remained a year before settling on a farm in eastern Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical church. In 1857 [1875] she became the bride of Geo. Bottjen. Ten children were born to them. Mr. Bottjen died February 17, 1899. Mrs. Bottjen was married to Johannes Peters February 11, 1904. They farmed near Battle Creek for 12 years before retiring to the present Peters residence in town. Mrs. Peters was a loving wife and mother. Her greatest joy in life was her children. Wherever there was sickness or sorrow, she was always there, to lend a helping hand. She had suffered failing health for two years and was bedfast two weeks before her death. During her illness she was cared for by two of her daughters, Mrs. C.H. Schultz and Mrs. Geo. Eichhorn. Surviving her are her husband, three daughters, Rosena of Dover, Idaho, Lizzie of Battle Creek, Caroline of Kingsley, six sons, Albert and Gustav Bottjen of Hornick, Reinhold Bottjen of Arthur, Chris Bottjen of Anthon, G. [George] Bottjen of Kingsley and William Bottjen of Battle Creek, 40 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, four brothers and one sister.
