Samuel David, son of John W. and Lizzie Henninger, was born at Highland Station, Kansas [census says Kentucky], July 27th, 1898, and died at Potter, Kansas, Tuesday, March 12th, 1901, at 8:30 a.m., aged 2 years, 7 months and 15 days. The funeral took place from the residence of the parents Wednesday, at 8 p.m. Mr. W.A. Hodge conducted the short services at the home. Beautiful songs were sung, fervent prayers were offered, and in his most earnest manner Mr. Hodge addressed the little group of friends and relatives gathered around the casket. His words were full of comfort and hope to the bereaved parents, and friendly admonition to everyone present. At the conclusion of his discourse, the coffin was borne away, and a small procession followed it to Fairview cemetery, where the little remains wreathed in flowers were laid to rest. Briefly, this is a statement of the life and death of our little friend. But it does not tell of his pain and suffering, or of a father's anxiety and a mother's vigils. Davy had been an invalid from heart trouble almost from the time of his birth. Though weak in body his mind was very bright. He possessed a memory that never forgot. In his suffering he displayed a heroism beyond his years. In spite of his disease, be possessed great tenacity of life. Medical skill could avail nothing in his case. It was a wonder to the physicians how he lived. He was one of the few persons whose being shines brightly through the "windows of the Soul." His honest, truthful eyes seemed to read one's most secret thoughts. All that knew him loved him, and he loved everyone, but his mamma the best. He could not bear to see anything suffer pain, and often showed great concern lest his little brother would get hurt in his efforts to learn to crawl and walk. Shortly after death had borne the spirit away, a beautiful halo suffused his countenance and remained there. To those who saw him, it suggested the transfiguration. The heavenly expression of the little face seemed to say "at rest". Death is a mystery. It separates friends and loved ones here, but unites them again in the better world. Nearly two years ago when Davy lived in Kentucky. His grandpa Henninger, on his death-bed, called for Davy just the day before he died. After holding him in his arms awhile he returned him to his mother and said; "Will not Davy make a sweet little angel?" On the golden shore of eternity, Davy and grandpa are united again. But earth's loss is heaven's gain. The reaper has gathered a precious flower and transplanted it in the garden of God. "Davy is gone." What a world of sadness these words convey. He is missed at the table and the fireside. No more will he sit at the window to watch the horses and cows come from the pasture. No more will he wait and watch for grandma to come. Nor, with childish joy, tell of his plans to visit her. Never will he again wait and watch for "papa to come home." While it is true that these things can never occur again, let us hope, that as our "Guardian Angel," he now holds out the beacon to light our bark safely into heaven's portals. May papa, mamma and little baby brother meet Davy in heaven where "we'll never say good bye." It is a great consolation to parents and friends that they done all they could to give him pleasure and dispel his pain. While his death may be for the best, yet it is but human that we should feel sad and bereft at his loss. As parents, relatives and friends, may God help us to bow in humble submission to the will of Him who said; "suffer not the children, and forbid them not to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven." There's a lone little grave on the hillside O'er which has no blossom yet blown; Upon it the first snow is falling And around it the winter winds moan. There's a dear little chair by the fireside That vacant will be evermore. There's a box laid aside full of playthings That will nevermore litter the floor. There's a scrap-book that's soiled and worn, More precious than all of earth's gold.— The work of the dear little fingers That are hid 'neath the dust and the mould. There's one more little angel in heaven,— (How selfish I am to complain!) I have one precious lamb safely folded Away from earth's sorrow and pain And its sin that can now never touch him Or tarnish his soul pure and white; For him has dawned the glad morning That never wanes into the night. Oh! heart that is empty and aching For the little one under the sod, Hold fast to these sweet words of comfort; "Of such is the Kingdom of God." Potter Leaf, 28 March 1901, page 8, column 3.
