Gibson, Old Pioneer Passes Away Mr. Gibson Was Long Prominent In Town And County Affairs. Samuel H. Gibson, one of the pioneer residents of this section, passed away at his home on Main Street, Crisfield, at an early hour last Saturday morning. Mr. Gibson would have reached his 89th birthday on July 14 next. Mr. Gibson was born in Baltimore City and was a son of Samuel and Rachael Byrd Gibson. With his parents he moved to Somerset County in early life and settled on Fishing Island, which his parents bought. A short while later the elder Gibson purchased the Dixon Hammock property on the Great Annamessex River, near Kingston where they resided for several years. Mr. Gibson moved to Crisfield in 1876 and resided here from that time until the day of his death. He was always engaged in the oyster packing business, both in Crisfield and on the Great Annamesaex River, until he retired from active business. He was one of the pioneer oyster packers on the Eastern Shore. Although he had not been actively engaged in business for several years, he was a man of remarkable vim and vigor for his years and was a familiar figure about town until a few days before his death. A life-long Democrat who was always interested in the welfare of his party, Mr. Gibson was elected in 1907 as a member of the Orphans Court for Somerset county and served a term of six years. He never aspired for or held another political office. Mr. Gibson war one of the founders of Mt. Pleasant M. P. church, this city, and was, since the organization of the church until the day of his death, a loyal and consistent member. As a man Mr. Gibson was a gentleman of the old school, who merited and enjoyed the confidence and respect of his fellow citizens. At the age of 25, Mr. Gibson was married to Miss Susan F. Riggin, who preceded him in death about 29 years ago. He is survived by the following children: Oliver P. Gibson, William E. Gibson and Mrs. Frank Dryden. Funeral services over the remains were conducted from his late home lest Monday morning, with Rev. C. M. Elderdice, pastor of Mt. Pleasant M. P. church, officiating. The body was laid to rest in Crisfield cemetery. The pall-bearers were Dr. G. T. Atkinson, Wm. P. Horsey, L. C. Quinn, Sr., A. R. Crockett, E. T. Riggin, L. S. Tawes, J. B. Nelson and O. C. Tawes.
