Gibson Passed Away Suddenly at Home Here Friday Former City Councilman Buried Monday In Local Cemetery ACTIVE IN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF CITY Benjamin F. Gibson, large real estate owner and former City Councilman of the City of Crisfield, passed away suddenly at 11:40 o'clock last Friday evening at the age of seventy-four. Though his health had not been of the best for some time, he had been up and about as usual less than an hour before his passing. Mr. Gibson, whose life and history is also the history a this city since he contributed materially to its early growth and development, was born at Marion, Md. in 1866, the son of Samuel H. Gibson and Susan Riggin Gibson, both of prominent pioneer of Somerset County families. When he was a lad of eleven, he along with his parents, moved to this city and for the following sixty-three years, which culminated after his death Friday night, he devoted his time and efforts to the improvement of the city, its various organizations and to the ongoing of any and all worthy causes. As a young man he and his brother, Mr. W. E. Gibson, became engaged in the seafood business and were the first to see the possibilities and respective growth of that industry in Crisfield. The firm of Gibson Bros., under which they operated, was the first seafood concern to do business on a large scale in this section. In later years Mr. Gibson retired from the seafood business and devoted his time to real estate. He owned many of Crisfield's finest buildings and building lots. Mr. Gibson, though a shrewd and successful business man, was known far and wide for his generosity and integrity, and worked up the ladder to success through his inborn industriousness. He took the steps of the ladder to success one at a time, refusing to skip a rung, if by so doing he accomplished this at the expense of his fellowman, for whom he had a deep affection and respect. Though he ever fought for the things he thought were right, he always listened to the other man's argument, and if persuaded that he was wrong on any issue, was quick to admit that he had been holding a false impression. Mr. Gibson, too, was active in the organization and growth of the Crisfield Volunteer Fire Company of which he was an Honorary Member, and which he saw grow from an amateurish outfit to the highly efficient unit that it now is. He was also active in church work, having for many years been a member and a regular contributor, both of his time and means, to the Immanuel Church. He was a member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147, A. F. & A. M. and was a director of the Marine Bank of Crisfield. Mr. Gibson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Olevia Gibson, a son, Lionel Gibson, and two grandchildren, Klein Gibson and L. Calvin Gibson. A sister, the Mrs. Nelia Dryden, of Langley Field, Va., and two brothers, W. E. Gibson of this city, and W. L. Gibson of Florida, who survive. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from his late home on Main street and were conducted by the Rev. C. M. Elderdice, pastor of the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church.
