In the 1870 his father, 2nd wife Nancy, and sister Sarah were living in Mills County, Iowa; as was Samuel and wife Mary. - - - Samuel was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted 16 May 1864 as a Private at the age of 18 (he would have been age 16). Mustered in Co D 138th Illinois Infantry on 21 Jun 1864 for a period of 100 day service. Mustered out 14 Oct 1864 at Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois. Samuel enlisted again as a Private on 31 Mar 1865. He mustered in Co H 11th Illinois Cavalry on 1 Apr 1865. Mustered out on 30 Sept 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee. Samuel's obituary states he was a boy 16 years of age when he enlisted in the army. He married Mary M Douglas on 10 Dec 1868 in Henderson County, Illinois. Mary and Samuel had two daughters, Etta L (Collings) and Nelle B. They came to Mills County, Iowa, in 1860 and in 1874 he united with the Methodist Church at Fairview near Strahan. They resided in Hastings. Samuel died at the Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1899 where he had gone for medical treatment. He died at the age of 50 years 10 months 4 days.
