Before coming to Forsyth County, N.C., she lived on West Main Street, Pilot Mountain, N.C. for over 70 years. Born in Dillard, N.C. on March 21, 1911, to Laura Mills Mitchell and John Wilson Mitchell, Mrs. Swanson graduated from King High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Guilford College class of 1929. Read More	CLEMMONS, NC ~ Bernice Mitchell Swanson of Harper Road, Clemmons, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2007. Before coming to Forsyth County, N.C., she lived on West Main Street, Pilot Mountain, N.C. for over 70 years. Born in Dillard, N.C. on March 21, 1911, to Laura Mills Mitchell and John Wilson Mitchell, Mrs. Swanson graduated from King High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Guilford College class of 1929. She enjoyed teaching school for 31 years, having taught at Francisco, Walnut Cove, King and Pilot Mountain. In recognition of her distinguished career as an educator, Mrs. Swanson was a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain where she taught Sunday school for over 50 years, and the evening WMU circle at First Baptist Church is named in her honor. She was active in various church and community organizations and served on the original board of Charles Stone Library. Her hobbies were bridge, reading and traveling. Known in her hometown of Pilot Mountain as someone who was very compassionate and sympathetic with anyone in need, Mrs. Swanson was recognized by the Pilot Mountain Woman's Club as Woman of the Year and by Channel 8 TV as Citizen of the Week. Mrs. Swanson lived in Pilot Mountain for over 70 years before moving to Heritage Woods Retirement Living in Winston-Salem in November 2001. While living at Heritage Woods, she made many new friends and served on the Ambassadors Committee. In July 2004, she moved to The Elms at Tanglewood Assisted Living in Clemmons, which she happily called home at the time of her death. She was predeceased by her late husband, O.N. Swanson, to whom she was married for over 50 years; her parents; and three brothers, Bernard, David and Bill Mitchell. Mrs. Swanson is survived by two sons, O. Nat Swanson and wife Phyllis of Clemmons and David Swanson and wife Jeri of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter, Kim Landreth, and husband Michael of Advance; two grandsons, James Swanson and David Swanson Jr. of Orlando, Fla. three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Bradley and Brittany Landreth of Advance; a sister, Virginia Mitchell Kerce of Lexington, S.C.; and a sister-in-law, Dell Mitchell of Louisville, Ky.; as well as several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at First Baptist Church, 308 West Main Street, Pilot Mountain, with the Rev. Eugene Sherrill and the Rev. Denny St. Clair officiating. Interment will follow at Pilot Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at First Baptist Church, and also after the service. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to thank the staffs at Heritage Woods Retirement Living, Bermuda Village Health Care, The Elms at Tanglewood Assisted Living, Hospice and Palliative CareCenter and Dr. John Roach and his staff at Salem Family Practice for the loving care, which was given to their mother and grandmother during her last years. Granny B, as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, will always have a special place in all of our hearts. Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain is handling the service.
