Description	:	When the Civil War began, Matthew Higgins enlisted at Wilmington, Delaware, as a Private on 25 Nov 1862 at the age of 20 for a period of 9 months. He mustered in Co F 5th Delaware Infantry on 25 Nov 1862. Mustered out 10 Aug 1863 at Wilmington, Delaware. Matthew enlisted again as a Sergeant on 11 Jul 1864 at the age of 22 years for a period of 30 days. He mustered in Co C 7th Delaware Infantry on 11 Jul 1864 and mustered out 12 Aug 1864. Matthew married Esther Rogers in Philadephia on 30 Jul 1873. They came to Malvern in 1880. Matthew and Esther had six sons. Matthew died in 1897 at the age of 35 years 3 months 5 days. - - - Mills County Tribune Sept 2, 1897 M.J. Higgins died Sunday morning at 4 o’clock. This death removes from our midst one whom everybody loved and never referred to except to praise. Matthew Joseph Higgins was born in Wilmington, Delaware, May 24th, 1842. He was married to Miss Ester (sic) Rogers in Philadelphia July 30th 1873. They came to Malvern in 1880. To them was born 6 sons all of whom are living and at home except the second son who was in Minnesota at this time. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church Wednesday at 10 a.m. Father Currens of Red Oak officiating after which the remains were taken in charge by the G.A.R. and conveyed to the cemetery. Mr. H. Enlisted in the 5th Delaware infantry 1863 and served during the war. His brother, Edmund O. of Wilmington, Del., nephew Harry Fischler of Philadelphia and Mrs. Dr. Jeffries of Council Bluffs were in attendance.
