Mrs. Rettenmayer has been an invalid for over thirty years, and most of this time she passed away in bed, and it is marvelous how she lived to such a ripe old age. Sophia Vogelman was born Aug. 13, 1830, in Humelsweiter, Germany, and was united in marriage to Joseph Rettenmayer at Rosenberg, Germany, Jan. 1st, 1849. They came to the United States in 1853 and located at Toledo, Ohio, where they resided for several years, and coming to Sherman County in 1879, where she resided until her death. She united with the Lutheran church many years ago. The deceased leaves to mourn her loss 5 sons, Fred, residing in Grand Island; Charlie, residing at Arcadia; William, residing in Loup City, and Adolph and Louie who are on the home place in Webster township, and two daughters, Mrs. Emma Conhiser, and Elizabeth Rettenmayer, and four grand children. All her sons and daughters and grand children were present at the funeral. Five children died when they were quite young. The funeral services were held from the residence Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. J. C. Tourtellot pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the Evergreen cemetery, beside the grave of her husband, who preceeded (sic) her to the great beyond about twenty-two years ago. The funeral was largely attended by old neighbors. The five sons and the son-in-law acted as pall bearers. The community extends the sincere sympathy to the bereaved family in the loss of their loved one. The Times-Independent - Aug 7 1913
