Read More	Great Falls Tribune (MT), 7 Sept. 1924 Froid Boy Loses Life in Effort to Save Culbertson Lad in Mine - Both Overcome by Coal Damp, Drop to Instant Death in Pit Culbertson, Sept. 6--Coal damp in the Toonison mine, nine miles north of here, claimed as victims Saturday, Stephen Marcinkowski, age 14, and Earl Hammond, 25, the latter going to the rescue of the Marcinkowski lad, whose curiosity led him to examine the mine's interior. The accident happened at 1 o'clock when the Marcinkowski boy, whose father is proprietor of the Culbertson bakery, stopped at the Toonison mine en route home from Froid, where he was accompanied by two sisters, and a playmate on an automobile trip. Young Marcinkowski started to climb down the shaft of the mine, followed by his playmate, Delmar Courchene, when suddenly the lad choked and emitted a groan, relinquishing his hold on the railing, having been overcome by the rise of damp gas from the mine. He fell about 50 feet to the bottom of the shaft. It is believed the fall broke his neck and that death was instantaneous. Young Courchene climbed to the top and ran to Earl Hammond, who was working on a threshing crew in a nearby field, notifying him. Hammond ran immediately to the mine and started to rescue the lad when the gas also overcame him and he dropped to the bottom, crushing his skull and succumbing at once. Dr. C. J. Munch of Culbertson and Marcinkowski's parents were notified by telephone. Meantime the owners of the mine started the blower in operation and cleared out the gas by suction. The bodies were recovered shortly after 3 o'clock, both badly crushed by their fall, and the coroner summoned. Stephen Marcinkowski is survived by his parents, seven sisters and one brother. Earl Hammond, whose heroic act caused his death, is survived by his parents who reside near Froid.
