With family by her side, she peacefully fell asleep in a hospital near her home on September 30, 2006, nearly reaching the age of one hundred years. Left to cherish warm memories are eight sons: Jack and Evelyn, Gilroy, California; Lewis and Sandy, Medford, Oregon; Ron and Joyce, Gridley, California; Ray and Joan, Willows, California; Herb and Claudell, Livingston, California; and Jim and Suzanne, Butte City, California; three daughters: Elaine and Harold Shoeffler, Stockton, California; Carol and Ivan Leach, Orland, California; and Judith, Bonners Ferry, Idaho. There are thirty-eight grandchildren, seventy-six great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and many step-grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters: Francis Cupples, Merced, California and Leah Ferrito, Atwater, California. She will also be missed by her many nephews and nieces. Her husband of sixty years, three daughters, one son, one daughter-in-law, three sons-in-law, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild preceded her in death. When Mother was seventeen years old, she gave her heart to God. Min. F.C. Fricke baptized her into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, on May 25, 1924. Always aware of her weakness, she had a steady faith and trust in God that she longed to pass on to her children and grandchildren. This faith was a sure anchor in the difficult times and kept her secure to her very last breath. Shortly before she passed away, she told a visitor, "My trust is strong." She was married to our father, Jack Spence, on April 5, 1925, in Winton, California. Together they struggled to provide for their growing family, moving to a farm and dairy in Glenn, California in 1953. She was much loved by her children and grandchildren and was affectionately called "Aunt Susie" by hundreds more. Blessed with a keen memory, she remembered each name and birthday of her nearly 150 descendants. Special to Mother the last three years were the caregivers who came to stay with her: Geneva, Trish, Jill, Rebekah and Sheri. She loved and appreciated each one and was loved by them in return. Mother's faithfulness will be a guiding star to each of her children, pointing the way to the Source of her joy. We treasure her love and prayers and hope to meet her again in heaven. Funeral services were held on October 4, 2006, at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Glenn, California. Officiating ministers were David Spence, Robert Koehn and Milton Giesbrecht. Burial was in the Willows Cemetery, Willows, California.
