As our readers are aware, Mr. Bestwick had been suffering for some time, and his death was not unexpected. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at G.A.R. hall, in charge of the Grand Army post. Elder Atkins, of the U.B. church, officiated, assisted by Revs. A.C. Hogbin and J.S. Ford. A very large concourse of people gathered to participate in the last rites, Mr. Bestwick having been an old citizen of the community and held in universal esteem. James Bestwick was born in Erie county, Pennsylvania, and at the time of his death was aged 55 years, 9 months and 16 days. He came with his father's family to Kansas in 1858, and on August 13th, 1862, enlisted in Co. G., 13th Kansas Vol. Inf., under Capt. Wm. S. Blackburn, and served until June 26, 1865, when he was discharged at Little Rock, Ark. He was is several hard battles, and much of his service was in swampy country. No doubt his health was impaired by his service. He was married in this county to Julia Perkins, on April 28, 1867, and remained a citizen of the county till his death. A wife and ten children, five boys and five girls, survive him. Mr. Bestwick was a model citizen, upright in all his dealings, of industrious habits, and always kind and considerate to those around him. He lived and died without an enemy and is sincerely mourned. He was frugal and thrifty and leaves his family comfortably provided for. He bore his sufferings, which extended over a period of six months, without complaint, and informed the family of the near approach of relief about an hour before his death. May we meet him in that higher and better world, is the prayer of his friends. Sabetha Republican Herald, Th. 8 Oct 1896: From Berwick James Bestwick's funeral here was largely attended from here. He was one of our old neighbors and was highly respected by all who knew him.
