Description	:	Civil War: Co. G, 5th U.S. Infantry, and Co. B and D, 1st California Cavalry Thomas was the son of John Clark and Eliza Prewitt. After his father's death in England in 1837 his mother married James Nash. Thomas, his mother and sister, Elizabeth, and step-family left England and arrived in the United States about 1843. G, 5th U.S. Infantry, and Co. B and D, 1st California Cavalry Thomas was the son of John Clark and Eliza Prewitt. After his father's death in England in 1837 his mother married James Nash. Thomas, his mother and sister, Elizabeth, and step-family left England and arrived in the United States about 1843. He became a U.S. citizen in 1858 and enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army for five years. Thomas was mustered into Company G, 5th U.S. Infantry, and posted to New Mexico Territory where he was mustered out in December 1863. Thomas re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer at Santa Fe and was mustered into Company B, 1st California Cavalry, December 13, 1863. Private Clark was transferred to Company D after he was wounded in action during a scout for hostile Indians January 28, 1864. He was mustered out with his company at Fort Union, New Mexico Territory, September 10, 1866 (Orton, p. 102). In 1870 Thomas married Lavina Ovilla (maiden name unknown; 1842, NY) in Ontario, Canada, where they appear in the 1871, 1891, and 1901 Canadian Censuses. Thomas was still living in Canada when he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension September 29, 1902, and received application No. 1,291,202 and certificate No. 1,067,457. Thomas and Lavina left Canada in 1908 and moved to Alameda, California, where they appear in the 1910 Census living on College Avenue with their daughter Lily Ovilla Clark (1873, CDN). Lavina indicated she had given birth to four children and that two were still living; Lily and Samuel Thomas Clark (1875, CDN). After Thomas died Lavina filed for a widow's pension at Alameda April 13, 1925, and received application No. 1,231,771, and certificate No. 964,239. --- Wounded in Action "January 26, 1864. Lieutenant Thomas A. Young, Fifth Infantry, California Volunteers, with one Sergeant and eleven Privates of the California Volunteers, started from Fort Craig, N. Mex. T., on a scout after Indians. On the twenty-eight instant the party was attacked by about sixty Indians, who wounded Lieutenant Young, Sergeant Thomas Richards and Privates Harvey McConkey, Thomas Clark, and Louis [Lewis] Mann, of Company D, First California Cavalry. In this affair seven Indians were killed. The party not being strong enough to continue the fight, returned to Fort Craig on the thirtieth Instant." (Orton, 670) Biography by Steve
