We used to herd about 600 head of cattle for other farmers in the summer. One of the greatest events of 50 years ago was the automobile. The first automobile we owned was a 1904 two-cylinder Rambler. We had one of the earliest threshing machines which had to be fed by hand and pulled from farm to farm by horses. When I first started school, the school was held in the summer months because of severe winters and bad roads". These were some of the recollections of the Withnell's. On June 20, 1917, Thomas Withnell was married to Mabel Carlson of Jud. Their children are: Viola, (Mrs. Albert Rode), Jud; Verla (Mrs. Richard Nitschke), Jud; Melvin, Dickey, and Delia, Jud. They joined the Methodist Church in 1917. They farmed near Jud until 1928 when they moved to Jud. For about 15 years they operated a small hatchery. In October 1943 they purchased the grocery store owned by A. M. Ringham. In March 1944 they moved into their present location, which they purchased from Sperling Brothers.
