Seneca Kas., August 11,—Pleasant Maynard, formerly of Trenton Mo., shot Thomas Kilkenny in a quarrel at Centralia yesterday, and a reward of $100 is offered for his arrest. The Axtell Standard 17 July 1903, Fri As a result of a 4th of July celebration in the grove near district 10, between Vermillion and Centralia, Patrick Cain is lying at the point of death and Thomas Kilkenny is under arrest for striking him and crushing his skull with a pitchfork. The trouble began when Cain, who is said had been drinking, interrupted and struck Kilkenny while the latter was engaged in setting off some fireworks. Later Cain armed himself with a gun and butcher knife and went to Kilkenny's home. It was there the fatal blow was struck. They were good friends previously. The preliminary trial of Thomas Kilkenny for assault with intent to commit murder upon Pat Cane took place at Centralia Tuesday, before Justice North. This was the case growing out of the altercation at the Centralia Fourth of July picnic. Kilkenny and Cane had trouble at the picnic and the same evening Cane, while under the influence of liquor, went to Kilkenny's home for the purpose of getting revenge armed with a big knife and a rifle that was afterward found not to be loaded. Kilkenny was warned of his coming and defended himself with a fork handle. Cane had his skull fractured and for a time it was thought he would die, but has recovered partially and has at times been able to be out, though it is said that his mind seemed to be affected for a time. At the hearing Tuesday County Attorney Nold appeared for the state and Ira Wells and Judge Emery for the defense. About twenty witnesses appeared and testified to the facts. Cane himself did not appear, his physicians testifying that he was not able to go on the stand. After hearing the evidence the justice discharged Kilkenny, deciding that while there was probable cause to justify the charge their was not sufficient evidence to hold the defendant. The finding seems to coincide with popular opinion and meets with general approval. The "Kilkenny Letter" Thomas Kilkenny, Democrat, and prosperous Good Intent farmer was actively involved in county and state politics. After a scene was made by Kilkenny at the 1912 Democratic state convention at Hutchinson, Kilkenny was embroiled in a case that denigrated Balie P. Wagner. It was later found that the vitriolic letter published by the Champion and signed by Mr. Kilkenny was a forgery by Will Hayes, Atchison hardware merchant and his brother, Attorney, Perry Hayes. The brothers were politically opposed to Wagner. The incidence led to several court cases in Atchison county and the Federal court in Topeka, but in the end the whole affair was dropped and considered a huge joke on Wagner with Kilkenny as the dupe. The Atchison Daily Globe, 15 Feb 1946, Fri, Page 8 At the age of 88 years Thomas Kilkenny, life-long northeast Kansas farmer and a resident of Atchison since he retired from the the farm in 1928, died at 9:25 o'clock this morning at his home, 914 Division. Funeral services will be held at St. Benedict's church Monday morning at 10 o'clock, and burial will be in the St. Louis cemetery at Good Intent. The rosary will be recited at the residence Sunday evening at 8 o'clock, The casket will be removed from the Harouff & Buis funeral home to the residence Saturday. Mr. Kilkenny was born Dec. 16, 1857 in county Mayo, Parish Knock, Ireland, the son of John and Mary Kilkenny, and came to America with his parents in 1869, when he was 12 years old. The family crossed the Missouri river from St. Joseph on a ferry and located in Doniphan county. The trip across the Atlantic - from Ireland to America required 21 days. In 1880, Mr. Kilkenny married Miss Mary Morrissey, daughter of Michael and Mary Morrissey, daughter of Michael and Mary Morrissey, Doniphan county pioneers. The marriage took place at St. Benedict's church near Bendena. They went to housekeeping on a farm in that vicinity and live there until they moved to a farm in Nemaha county, near Vermillion, in 1883. In 1906 Mr and Mrs. Kilkenny and their children moved to the Good Intent neighborhood, which remained their home until Mr. Kilkeny retired from farming and moved to Atchiosn in 1928. Mrs. Kilkenny's death occurred in 1923. Mr. and Mrs. Kilkenny were the parents of nine children, seven of whom survive: James, Miss Catherine and Tony, of Atchison; Mrs. Mary Quackenbush, Salem Ore.; Mrs. Agnes Dowling, Falls City, Neb.; Maurice Kilkenny, Dearborn, Mich., and Mrs. Esther Barber, Minneapolis, Minn. A son, Tom, and a daughter, Mrs. Anna Duffy preceded him in death. There are 3 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
