Read More	Tipton Advertiser Friday 24 Dec 1915 Front page OLDEST RESIDENT OF TIPTON DIES Thomas Highly Passes Away Sunday At Age Ninety Years and Seven Months Thomas Highly at the time of his death, the oldest resident of Tipton, was born in Swineford, Union county, Pa., May 5, 1825, and died in Tipton, Iowa, Dec. 19, 1915, aged 90 years, 7 months and 14 days; had he lived until next May he would have been 91. When he was seventeen years of age the family, and he with them, started westward. For eight years the home was in Ohio, and then, some of the family started for Iowa, he came with them and on July 1, 1850 he first trod the streets of Tipton. After remaining in this vicinity about two years, he was seized with the "Farther West" fever, and started for California, where he spent the next two years, returning to Iowa in 1855. For sixty years the life of many, this has been his home. He was married to Catharine Roesser September 8, 1864, 34 years of their married life was spent on the farm south of Tipton. In 1898 they left the farm and came to Tipton, and have spent these last 17 years in this place. He was a good man, friendly, honest, industrious, worthy of the respect in which he has always been held. Seven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Highly, but two have passed on before many years ago, Robert at the age of one and a half years, and Charles at the age of between eight and nine. The remaining children are two sons, Thomas and John, three daughters: Mrs. Fannie Ridenour of Minnesota, Mrs. Grant Baker and Mrs. Ira Melson of this place. He retained his full powers almost until the last, and although old in body, remained young in spirit. In these last years he was comparatively free from bodily pain, until the last ten weeks, when the spirit was endeavoring to free itself from the body and go home. He believed in God and the future world, confessed his faith in Christ and was a member of the Reformed church. Funeral services were held from his late residence on Tuesday morning and interment made in the family lot in Rochester cemetery.
