The Rev. Norbert Tegmeier officiated at the services. Tom Eden, 68, of Elgin, Ill., formerly of Monticello, died the morning of Aug 26, 1986, at the John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, following a long illness. He was a well-known horse breeder and trainer. Mr. Eden was born Nov. 3, 1917, in Jones County near Monticello, the son of Henry J. and Emma C. Ahlrichs Eden. He received his education in the Monticello schools where he graduated in 1937. He later attended Coe College. He worked for several years in Gulf Port, Miss. where he was a lifeguard and cook. Tom Eden and Shirley Hoag were married in 1940. The couple lived for a short time in Gulf Port before returning to Monticello where Tom farmed. He later worked as an auctioneer and operated the Motel Eden and a trailer park. He became well known as a breeder, trainer and driver of trotters. In 1970, he moved to Elgin, Ill., to pursue this occupation. Mr. Eden was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Elgin, Ill. He was baptized Dec. 5, 1917 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Monticello, where he confirmed his faith April 9, 1933. He had been a member of the Jones County Fair Board and an athletic booster for the Monticello schools. He is survived by four children, Ronald Eden of Crawfordsville, Ind. Tammy Ellison of Riverdale, GA and Tanya Tobiason and Tom D. Eden, both of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; his mother, Emma Eden of Monticello; a sister Dorothy Tobiason of Monticello; and his long-time companion, Marian Ashby of Elgin, Ill. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister.
