Description	:	Valerian "Spike" Hronek - age 94, of Pocahontas, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center in Pocahontas, Iowa after a lingering illness. Valerian Francis Hronek was born October 5, 1922, on the family farm of Wesley and Mary (Hotovec) in Pocahontas, Iowa. He attended Country School and Pocahontas High School. Read More	Valerian "Spike" Hronek - age 94, of Pocahontas, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017, at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center in Pocahontas, Iowa after a lingering illness. Valerian Francis Hronek was born October 5, 1922, on the family farm of Wesley and Mary (Hotovec) in Pocahontas, Iowa. He attended Country School and Pocahontas High School. After graduation, he entered the US Army to serve in WWII. He was selected for Officers Candidate School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, which he completed as a Lieutenant.The majority of his deployment was in the European Theater in Italy and France serving in the artillery divisions. After the peace treaty, he was transferred to the occupational forces in Japan for two years. Returning to Iowa, Spike worked as a draftsman in Muscatine, IA for several years - then as an employee of the Levene Construction Company in Pocahontas. He was elected Deputy Sheriff in Pocahontas and later worked at the Iowa Liquor Sales. As a lifetime member of the American Legion, he served as commander of the Honor Guard and for many years marched the Guard to the Memorial Day Presentation at the Cemetery. One of his proudest possessions was the 57 year plaque for serving in that capacity. He loved to hunt and fish, spending much fishing time in the lakes around Pocahontas and also with the fishing crews going to Northern Minnesota and Canada. One of his talents was his fine wood carvings, mostly of Native Americans and of horses. He was an avid reader, especially of western novels and had quite a library of them. He enjoyed music, playing the guitar and mandolin (which he built) or listening to his library of 40's music. Spike followed the rodeos and sports on TV always supporting his teams - the Minnesota Vikings and the Phillys. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Mary Hronek; sisters, Irene Drobney of Pocahontas and Evelyn Groff of Prescott, AZ. Surviving family include a brother Jerome of Pocahontas and eleven nieces and nephews.
