Mrs. King, Veda Nashino was born, February 22, 1898 in Morocco, Indiana to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nashino. She was married to Louis King in Manhattan, Kansas. Mrs. King, Veda Nashino was born, February 22, 1898 in Morocco, Indiana to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Nashino. She was married to Louis King in Manhattan, Kansas. They moved to Winner in 1919 and lived on a farm there. They farmed near Fairfax, South Dakota for five years, and south of Colome for nine years. Six years prior to her death her husband had purchased a ranch on Landing Creek. On a Friday evening, June 6, 1946 Louis and Veda were in their car which had become mired in a creek crossing. Louis left to get a team of horses from his farm. A flash flood swept down Landing Creek taking Veda with it. Louis, coming back with the team, saw her being carried away with a big white timber. He walked to the Alfred Nordby home for help. The searching party found her body late that night. Alfred's sister Ruth (Mrs. Lester Knudson) went over to the King ranch the next morning to get the children. The children had cried the entire night and were very happy to see Ruth. The boys put Ruth and their 15 month old baby sister June on the saddle horse; the other children, milk cows and dog followed behind in the mud to the Alfred Nordby home. Mrs. Nordby fed the children and kept them until their father was ready to take them home. The children were: Warren, Clifford, Marvin, Norman, Arnold, Orlin and seven daughters--Jean, Joyce, Judy, Joan, Janet, Jeraldine and the baby June. Mr. Louis King died some months later.
