Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Marilyn, of Fullerton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom (Sandy) Sonderup and Mark (Kathy) Sonderup of Fullerton; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy (Phil) Cole of Brule; and four sisters, Fern Smith, Doris Fenstemaker of Fullerton, Elna Boardman of Grand Island and Ruth Bisel of Fullerton. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Melinda (Randy) Endorf, Kelly (Mike) Hale, Ryan (Beth) Sonerup, Dr. Stephanie (Ben) Marcy, Heather (Justin) Stofer, Jamie (Ben) Keep, Ty (Jen) Cole, Sam (Tami) Cole, Tracey Sonderup, Heidi (Vaughn) Page, Katie Cole; nine great-grandchildren, Rachel, Ella, Gavin, Teegan, Lora, Lilly, Layla, Alex and Charolette; three sisters-in-law, Judy Sonderup of Genoa, Wanda Sonderup of Fullerton, and Dorothy (Duane) Dudney of Hastings; and one brother-in-law, Johnny (Karen) Forbes of Palmer. Vern attended a rural school near Wolbach and graduated from eighth grade. In 1943, the family moved to Nance County, where he farmed with his dad and brothers. On Oct. 29, 1950, he married Marilyn Forbes at the First Presbyterian in Fullerton. They continued to farm northeast of Fullerton until Vern was called to serve in the U.S. Army in July 1952. After basic training, he was chosen to be an instructor for gun mechanics at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, until his honorable discharge in June 1954. He also received his GED while in the Army. After Vern returned home from service, they farmed southwest of Fullerton for the next 38 years. They retired and moved to Fullerton in 1993. Vern was always busy farming, taking care of hogs and cattle. In 1960, he purchased their first Charolais bull. Then they went into the business of raising and selling purebred Charolais cattle, holding a bull sale every spring for 30 years. Vern and Marilyn delivered cattle all over the United States and Canada every spring. They also spent winters in Texas for 10 years. Vern was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He served on the Nance County Board of Supervisors for 16 years, Nebraska Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Nance County FHA Board and Co-op Board. He was a great supporter of FFA, 4-H and agriculture through the classroom and the Farm Bureau. Vern's hobbies were family, farming, visiting with friends far and wide, welding, hunting and camping. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Norman Sonderup, Dale Sonderup, Lee Sonderup, Milo Sonderup and Larry Sonderup.
