Verna was born on October 15, 1914, in Dumont Iowa, the daughter of George W. and Mary A. (Becker) Hanawalt. She was raised in Dumont and graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1931. Place, 100, of Janesville, Iowa died on Thursday, February 26, 2015, at New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Verna was born on October 15, 1914, in Dumont Iowa, the daughter of George W. and Mary A. (Becker) Hanawalt. She was raised in Dumont and graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1931. She then graduated from Pitzi's School of Beauty. On December 15, 1936, Verna was united in marriage to Thomas Stanley Place at St. Mary Catholic Church in Waverly, Iowa. The couple made their home in rural Janesville, where they raised their two sons. Verna was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in Denver. She enjoyed making and decorating wedding cakes, bowling, and reading romance novels and mysteries. She also liked watching sports, including basketball, football, and baseball; in 1934, she attended a World Series game in St. Louis, MO! Family time was very important to Verna. She especially liked to spend time with her grand and great-grandchildren. Verna's memory is honored by two sons, Clinton T. Place of Cedar Falls, IA, and Thomas L. (Karen) Place of Janesville, IA; two grandchildren, Kimberly (Clay) Rathbone and Michael (Leana) Place; five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Haylee and Olivia Rathbone, and Alexandra and Annabella Place; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1972, two sisters, and one brother. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday, March 2, 2015, at the St Paul United Church of Christ in Denver, with Pastor Craig Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2014 at the Funeral Home in Denver, where the family will greet friends from 3 to 6 p.m., and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
