Read More	Vernard was born on the homestead in Brunswick, NE on April 1, 1922 to Walter Henery Philip Hoscheit and Elsie Lena (Westerhoff) Hoscheit. He was best known as “Bud” while growing up, as “Vern” as an adult, and as “Dad” by the baseball players he coached along the way. The blue eyed, curly blond haired boy’s love of baseball was fueled by his father, a farmer. He and his father would throw down flour sacks in the pasture and start up a game with the other local fathers and their sons. Vern received his education in Brunswick, NE, often riding his pony to school. He would tell of feeling fortunate as he and his younger sister, Delores, had a pony to ride, unlike a lot of the other kids who had to walk to school. His parents had a large garden and fruit trees from which they preserved produce. He told the story of how his father would ask him to pick the ripe cherries and tell him to whistle all the while, so as not to eat all of them. Cherry pie and chocolate covered cherries were his favorites throughout the years. He began his baseball career at the age of 15 years old in 1937, with the Neligh Antelopes. After completing the Legion program, Vern went on the Concordia, Kansas to play in the Ban Johnson League for the Concordia Blues. In Kansas, he also attended and graduated from the American School of Commerce while leading the Concordia team in batting with .308 averages. Vern excelled inn bookkeeping and math computations. His mathematical skills proved to be a valuable asset managing teams and as the Three-I-League President. In 1941, he decided that he would try and play major league baseball by trying out for the State League rooster at Norfolk, NE, a Yankee’s Farm Club. The manager, Ray (Rabbit) Powell, was known as one the best tutors of young players in the business at the time. Vern’s first chance to make the club happened when he caught batting practice in spring training and then two full games. The next day, Powell asked the former yank regular catcher to catch batting practice, but that individual knew he had it made on the team, so he acted as though he did not hear the manager’s request. Vern then ran into the club house, to his gear on, and came back ready to assume the duties. Impressed with his hustle, hard work, and determination, Powell allowed him to catch practice and won a spot on the roster for that season dismissing the other 13 catchers in camp. Vern would say, “I beat out the other 13 catchers because I had an arm that wouldn’t quit. His career in both minor and Major League Baseball spanned more than 54 years, 19 of those years with the New York Yankees organization. His lifelong career of baseball was briefly interrupted by World War II from 1943 to 1945, being honorable discharged in January 1946. Primarily a catcher, he had also been a second baseman, team manager, general manager, president of the Three-I League, scout, minor league camp coordinator, bull pen coach and traveling catching instructor. He was a team member of the 1966 World Series-winning Baltimore Orioles, the 1972 and 1973 World Series-winning Oakland Athletics, the 1973 All-Stars, the 1986 World Series-winning New York Mets and the 1987 All-Stars.
