Description	:	Vernel was born on a farm in Pocahontas County on June 10, 1907, to Albert Augustus and Mary Eleanor Craig Bunch, the third of five children. She graduated from Laurens High School in 1923 and enrolled in Morningside College in Sioux City, where she met her future husband, Glen Ingram of Sioux Rapids, who she described throughout her life as "dark and handsome." She graduated from Laurens High School in 1923 and enrolled in Morningside College in Sioux City, where she met her future husband, Glen Ingram of Sioux Rapids, who she described throughout her life as "dark and handsome." Not only in love, but "on fire to teach," she taught in a one-room country school for a year after her freshman year and graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Morningside in 1928. That August, Vernel married Glen in Sioux City and followed him to Allen, Neb., where he had a position as a high school teacher, and she worked as a part-time high school drama teacher. The pair was then hired to combine teaching and administrative duties in a small high school in the Dutch community of Lester. Glen was high school superintendent, physics teacher and football coach. Vernal taught English and served as drama and "declamatory" coach. Feeling they couldn't support a family on Depression teachers' pay, the young couple joined Glen's father, D.E. Ingram, on the Ingram family farm four and a half miles east of Sioux Rapids and in 1936 purchased the farm from him. From then on, Vernal devoted herself to her family and to community and church activities. She and Glen built the farm into a profitable business, remodeled the old 12-room farmhouse, upgraded the surrounding grounds and raised children. Vernel, who always missed teaching, found plenty of outlets in community organizations. These included the First Methodist Church of Sioux Rapids where she taught Sunday School and was an active member of Circle and the Women's Society of Christian Service; Thursday Afternoon Club; Order of Eastern Star; PEO and 4- H Clubs. Once the last of her children had left the farm for college, Vernel did return to teaching for awhile and Glen returned to his youthful interest in athletics. His success in masters track tour tournaments gave them opportunities to travel abroad together. In 1977, friends and relatives gathered to help them celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. As the years went by, they began to detach themselves from the farm which had sustained them, to migrate south each fall with other "gray geese," spending winters in Albuquerque, N.M., with their youngest three daughters. In 1984 Glen died a few months after a brain tumor was discovered and Vernal stayed with her daughter, Carolyn Staples, until she moved into a nursing home in Albuquerque in 1991. Vernel Ingram was an industrious, creative mother, wife and community leader who instilled a love for education and for the arts in her children and who, as a teacher, believed, "There is no such thing as a bad child." Although increasingly frail and suffering from memory problems in her last years, she remained cheerful and positive. Vernel was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her brother, Clifford and her sisters, Dorothy and Elvira. Survivors include four daughters — Dr. Jan Ingram and son-in-law Rick Goodfellow, Anchorage, Alaska; Dr. Carolyn and Bill Staples, Albuquerque, N.M.; Cheryl Ingram, Santa Fe, N.M.; and Charlotte Ingram, Scotsbluff, Neb.; a son — Nurmi and Judy Ingram, El Paso, Texas; five grandchildren; and a sister — Ila and Leo Smith, Pine River, Minn.
