Description	:	Vessie Louisa Mattingly was born August 1, 1909, in Bachelor Township, Eureka town limits in Greenwood County, Kansas, the only daughter born to Edward Stephen and Lillian May "Lillie" (Flummer) Mattingly. After graduating from Neal High School she briefly attended a nursing college in Wichita, Kansas. When she was home from nursing college she worked at the Basham Hospital in Eureka, Kansas. It was while working there that she met Earle Eugene Huston. Earle was the brother-in-law of Lyle Channing Baird of Baird Funeral Homes. After graduating from Neal High School she briefly attended a nursing college in Wichita, Kansas. When she was home from nursing college she worked at the Basham Hospital in Eureka, Kansas. It was while working there that she met Earle Eugene Huston. Earle was the brother-in-law of Lyle Channing Baird of Baird Funeral Homes. Earle worked with Lyle as an ambulance driver and mortician. Vessie and Earle were married on November 11, 1933, at the Methodist Church in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. Earle was born November 17, 1900, in Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska, the son of Charles Edwin and Mary Louise (Bailey) Huston. Shortly after marrying Vessie quit her job and she and Earle lived at his rental house 611 N. Myrtle St., Eureka for 8 1/2 years. Vessie and Earle had the following known children: 1. Mary Ann (Huston) Higgs-Ward 2. Earla Sue (Huston) VanHorn-Tate In 1941 they moved to Wichita, Kansas where Earle pursued the carpenter trade. In 1945 they bought their home at 730 S. Holyoke St. Earle died January 30, 1972, in Wichita, Kansas. After Earle's death, Vessie moved back to Eureka, Kansas and lived at 512 N. Walnut St. for the remainder of her life. After moving back to Eureka, she renewed a childhood friendship with Otis Black and while they never married he was a daily part of her life for the remainder of his life. Vessie died June 15, 2001, in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas. VESSIE HUSTON Vessie L. Huston, 92, of Eureka, died on Friday, June 15, 2001, at Medicalodge in Eureka. She was born on August 1, 1909, near Eureka, the daughter of Edward Stephen and Lillie May (Flummer) Mattingly. She and her family moved to Neal in 1912, where her father was a hardware dealer for 37 years. Her parents' families came to the Eureka area in the mid 1880s. After graduating from Neal High School in 1927, she entered St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita. Later she was a nurse at Basham Hospital in Eureka. She was united in marriage to Earle Eugene Huston of Brock, Neb., on November 11, 1933, in Wichita. Her husband was then employed at Baird Furniture and Undertaking in Eureka. They moved to Wichita in 1942. After her husband's death on January 30, 1972, she returned to Eureka in 1973. She was a member of Zion Methodist Church in Wichita, the Ilus and Daytime Chapter 433 Order of the Eastern Star where she received her 50-year pin in October of 1981. Until April of this year, she volunteered with the Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary where she has worked over 4,600 hours. She is survived by daughters Mary Ann Ward of Littleton, Colo., and Earla Sue Tate of Parker, Colo,; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 19 at the Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka with Pastor David Hammond and Wayne Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. Memorials have been established in her name with the Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary and the Eureka Church of Christ. Contributions may be sent in care of the Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home of Eureka.
