The 1850 records that both Jacob & Sarah Hall Absher & the Absher children were born in Wilkes, NC. In 1860 "Jenny" age 13 is living with her father & mother "Jacob & Sarah" & her siblings "Benjamin" "Owen" "Charity" "Caroline" "Lenny" "William" "Candis" & "Mcdaniel Absher". Her brother "Alfred Absher" has married . He lives with his wife "Sarah Durham Absher" & his baby daughter "America" age 8 months, a short distance from them. The 1860 census records the family living in the Lower Division of Wilkes, NC. Post Office (Mulberry). When the Civil War occurs and the three oldest sons "Benjamin" "Alfred" & "Owen" are conscripted into service; it would have been up to the oldest daughters "Charity" "Virginia" "Caroline" & "Linny" along with the younger siblings to help with the farm in unison with the other chores they already have. What strong girls; not yet women; they must have been. They grew into their womanhood during the Civil War. By the 1870 census the Absher family has endured the Civil War; but with much loss. "Alfred" & "Owen Absher" died and only "Benjamin" returns home. It is unknown who brought the news of the deaths of Alfred & Owen Absher to the family. There was no official way by either side during the Civil War to let loved ones know of deaths and were usually brought by family members who were fighting with them. The Absher household consist of 13 people in 1870. Jacob & Sarah Absher ages 58 "respectively". "Benjamin Absher" age 30 has survived the Civil War; married Nancy Brown 19 Jan 1862 shortly before his enlistment. Their marriage did not endure and they parted ways. They have 2 children "Daniel Alexander" & "Sarah Linda"; Their children live with Benjamin in his parents household. "Lewis Mcdaniel Absher" age 12 "Charity Evaline" age 25 "Virginia" age 20 "Caroline" is also listed in a separate houshold with Jacob Hays her husband & her child James Hays. This discrepancy was researched and determined this is the same Caroline in the Absher household. She is listed in two households but is the same person; & "Candis" age 14 live at home with their parents Sarah & Jacob. Sarah & Jacobs grandchildren "America" & "Henry" are there with them since their parents death. "Bryant Baugus" age 18 is living is the household as well. The family is recorded to be living in Union, Wilkes, NC (Post Office - Wilbar). "Linny" is missing from the household in 1870.) It has not been determined where Linny might be in 1870 or whether her name was simply left out of the 1870 census or she is actually the one listed as Caroline but with the wrong name on the 1870 census. The Absher family has also lost young "William". There are no family stories about his death. He died in September of 1863, according to the "Levi Absher Ledger" as "Little Billie Absher". They have also lost "Sarah Durham Absher" "Alfreds wife; with both parents dead; their children "America" & "Henry" are now officially orphaned and living with their grandparents "Jacob" & "Sarah" along with other members of the family in 1870. In total "Virginia" has lost 3 brothers and her sister-in-law "Sarah" within a decade. She along with her sisters, father & mother buried William & Sarah. The 1880 census record was the last census record Virginia "Jenny" Absher age 28 is recorded in. She is living with her parents Jacob & Sarah "Sallie" Hall Absher and listed as a Farm Laborer. Jenny Absher is single and has no children. "The Levi Absher Ledger" records her as (Gennie Absher) and her death date as 31 July 1892. Levi Absher Ledger; published by the Wilkes Genealogical Society. This book can be ordered from the Wilkes Genealogical Society. I believe that this is Virginia Absher daughter of Jacob & Sarah Hall Absher; since they as well as other members of the family are recorded in the Levi Absher Ledger. Virginia Absher would have been around 45 years of age at the time of her death. She died from natural causes or disease. There is no way to really know.
