Barkmeier Fillmore County News, Exeter, Nebraska - July 17, 1986 Walter Henry Barkmeier was born to August Frank Barkmeier and Anna Barbara Menke Barkmeier on September 29, 1912, at Exeter, Nebraska and passed away June 29, 1986, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha Nebraska, at the age of 73 years and 9 months. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Stephen's Catholic Church, and attended St. Stephen's Catholic Grade School and graduated from the Exeter Public School with the class of 1931. He was a life-long resident of Exeter. He managed the Exeter Coop Elevator for several years and then entered into partnership in the implement business, with Clarence Dawson for 30 years. He was an avid sports fan and closely followed local and national sporting events. Walt was married to Virginia Thompson of Belvidere, Nebraska on September 29, 1941 and to them three children were born. He was preceded in death by his daughter Wanda, son-in-law Duane and grandson Brian Luebbe, his parents, August and Anna Barkmeier and two sisters, Ella Morgan and Lillian Barkmeier. He is survived by his wife Virginia, son Dr. Wayne Barkmeier and his wife Carolyn of Elkhorn, Nebraska; daughter Wilma Keil of Nebraska City, Nebraska; brothers, Louis of Exeter, Nebraska, Vincent of Battle Lake, Minnesota and Ray of Hampton, Iowa; sisters, Rose Lilly, of Los Angeles, California, Helena Lea Barkmeier of Exeter, Nebraska; 7 grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter, Nebraska on Tuesday, July 1, 1986 with Msgr. Ingenhorst officiating. Pallbearers were: William Morgan, Gail Heffelfinger, Roger Johnson, Tom Votipka, Jerry Barkmeier and Joel Barkmeier. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery with Farmers Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
