Scheer, age 57, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 6, 2000, in Omaha, Nebraska, following a lengthy illness. Services were held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 9 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Scott Fiege officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Mapleton. Wayne Keith Scheer was born February 7, 1943 at home in rural Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Edwin William and May C (Wasmund) Scheer. He grew up on a farm and received his education in the Danbury and Mapleton area and graduated with the High School Class of 1962. It was then that he started farming and continued to do so until 1989 when he was forced to quit farming due to ill health. He was a member of the Pork Producers. On September 6, 1970, Wayne married Bonnie Fick at St Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton where he was a lifelong member. In September of 1990, Wayne underwent a liver transplant and just a year and a half later, he suffered a stroke, all of which disabled him, in 1996, he had a kidney transplant. Wayne remained proud of the fact that he had endured the transplant and enjoyed the time he spent on picnics with other transplant recipients. Wayne was a member of the Lutheran Layman League, where he played on the dart ball team from 1964 to 1979 and was captain of the team from 1965 to 1967. He was also a member of the Aid Association for Lutherans, and served as Financial Secretary and Recording Secretary at St Matthew Lutheran Church. In Novenber of 1994, Wayne took over the responsibility of being a Weather Observer, a position his mother had had for decades. He was president of the Ostomy Club and did voluntary work for other ileostomy patients. A talent Wayne had and took pride in, was his penmanship skills. Survivors include two sons, Darin Scheer of Soldier, Iowa and Mark Scheer of Kansas City, Missouri; one daughter, Carla Johnson and her husband, Jason of Bronson, Iowa; one brother, Daryl Scheer and his wife, Connie of Mapleton, Iowa; one sister, Jean Watson and her husband, Howard of Liberty Missouri; one aunt, Dorothy Pope of Mapleton, Iowa and one granddaughter, Chelsea Johnson, along with other relatives, neighbors and friends. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.
