He attended Independence Valley Grade School north of Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School. He was a farmer and stockman in Atchison County for many years. He was born April 8, 1922, in Atchison, to Henry and Hulda Winkler Handke. He attended Independence Valley Grade School north of Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School. He was a farmer and stockman in Atchison County for many years. He also worked at the Pillsbury flour mill in Atchison for 38 years. He retired in 1985. He was a veteran of World War II. He was in the Army from 1942 to 1946 and served in Europe. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post No. 6 of the American Legion, both in Atchison. He married Doris Reder on July 25, 1948, in Wathena. She survives. Other survivors include a son, William Handke, at home; a brother, Lewis Handke, Atchison; and two sisters, Henryetta Franklin and Ruthanna Kimmi, both in Atchison. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison. Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post No. 6 of the American Legion will conduct graveside services at Sunset Memory Gardens in Atchison. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison. Memorial contributions may be made to the endowment fund at Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison, 66002.
