He was left an orphan at an early age, his father dying when he was 3 months old, his mother when he was nine years. Most of his early training was spent with relatives. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed at the age of 14 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was apprenticed as blacksmith for several years, and also learned the carpenter trade. At the age of 21 he entered the army, completing his training in 1 ½ years. Following this, he served his country in several wars, including the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Receiving his honorable discharge from the army, he immigrated to America, arriving in Chicago in the fall of 1871. This being immediately after the Chicago fire, he commenced working as a carpenter again and remained here for some time. Later he went to Michigan, and on June 3, 1875, was united in marriage to Louisa Gnatkowsky. In the fall of 1877, Mr. and Mrs. Berndt, and daughter Huldah, together with Mrs. Berndt's parents and their family, came to Kansas and took up adjoining claims, nine miles southwest of Glasco. Here he built his home and also assisted other early settlers in getting their homes started. Always diligent and untiring workers, Mr. and Mrs. Berndt improved their home and acquired other land near their original homestead. In the spring of 1916 they moved to Glasco and have since made this their home. Ten children were born to this union, one daughter, Clara, dying in infancy. Together with their mother, four daughters and five sons survive. They are: Mrs. O.W. Horn and Mrs. T.V. McCollough, of Glasco; Mrs. J.A. Garrison and Mrs. Paul Peterson of Delphos; Carl, William, Herman, Otto and Edward, all of Glasco. He also leaves twenty-two grandchildren, besides numerous other relatives and friends. (Glasco Sun)
