Mr. Hines was born in Union, SC on May 20, 1921, a son of the late John Lewis Hines and Lois Inez (Willard) Hines. Mr. Hines was born in Union, SC on May 20, 1921, a son of the late John Lewis Hines and Lois Inez (Willard) Hines. A graduate of Union High School, he retired from Milliken & Company - Midway Plant, was a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II as a tank driver, a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class, a former member of the Union County School Board, the Union City Council, an Honorary Member of the Union Rotary Club and a member of the American Legion Post #22. Mr. Hines also wrote a column in the Union Daily Times, "Around Town with Wishie" for over twenty-five years. Surviving in addition to his wife are a grandson, Matthew Thomas Hines of Columbia, SC; a granddaughter, Anna Katherine Soto and husband Jeremy of Duncan; two brothers: J.D. Hines of Union and Johnny Hines of Greenville. Mr. Hines was predeceased by a a son, Willard Montgomery "Monty" Hines, Jr, two brothers and a sister. Graveside services were held 2:00 PM Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. John Cribb, Rev. Tommy McManus and Mr. Al Smith. The following were asked to assemble at the graveside at 1:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort: Joey Hines, Anna and Robert Brown, Mickey Wingo, Al Smith, Dot Holley, Dr. Paul K. Switzer, Pearl Crocker and Dianne Hendricks. Visitation was held at the graveside immediately following the service. Many knew the columnist only as "Wishie," a moniker that stuck with him since childhood, but everyone knew Willard "Wishie" Hines when they saw him. Keeping things light-hearted was the mission for Wishie, who routinely walked around Union hoping to report the happier side of the news. In recent weeks, however, Wishie's health took its toll and he was bedridden, unable to write his well-read pieces. Thursday, Hines died at age 86. His wife, Margaret Hines, said the Union Daily Times sold more papers on Wednesdays than any other day and that his absence was likely noticed. "People loved to see their names in the paper. Before he got disabled, he found little newsy things, always found something positive. He's had so much heart surgery, he wasn't able to get out and go around town, so people would come to him and call him. He was loved by everybody." Margaret said her husband endured a number of surgeries, many of which were related to two heart attacks in recent years. He always fought through those sick spells, Margaret said, but the recent death of their 58-year-old son took its toll on him. "There wasn't any fight left in him. And he had so many heart surgeries in the last 25 years. His body was just chewed up with heart surgeries, and his blood pressure just dropped," Margaret said. Wishie's long-time physician and friend, Paul Switzer Jr., said Wishie was in the hospital a week ago for an emergency related to a hernia. "He wasn't well to start with," Switzer said. "And it was devastating when his son died, but he got through it. We thought he was doing pretty good until this hernia thing came up. He had to spend a lot of time in bed at home. But he had not been real active since his son died." It was hard for Wishie to get through the ordeal, said his wife, who has known him since the first grade. It will be even harder for her to endure the loss of her husband of 68 years, she added. "He had been a wonderful husband and a wonderful father," Margaret said. "He volunteered at the hospital and Meals on Wheels. He was just for people; a people person." Switzer, whose father also was Wishie's physician years ago, said he would miss his friend. "I've been seeing Wishie for a long, long time. He was more a friend than a patient," Switzer said. "I'm going to miss him. I miss him now."
