Houseman Family Funeral Home of Clear Lake is in charge of arrangements. William Jr. Bublitz was born Jan. 23, 1930, in rural Altamont to William F. and Ida Mae (Lemke) Bublitz. He attended the Rush Lake District 44 country school, graduated from the Altamont grade school and in 1949 graduated from Clear Lake High School. After attending a teacher's college in Madison, he taught at a country school northeast of Clear Lake. In 1950, he entered the U.S. Air Force. During his 20 years of active military service, he served in the Korean War, was assigned to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico and was at the nuclear test sites of Eniwetok and Bikini Atolls in the South Pacific and at Nevada. He also was an Air Force recruiter in Syracuse, N.Y., during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal for his outstanding service during 1967 to 1970 at Erding Air Base in Germany. After he retired from active duty in 1970, he continued his education in Plattsburgh, N.Y., where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. In 1973, he began his employment with Plattsburgh's Imperial Wallpaper Mill as an accountant. In 1979, he was transferred to their Ashaway, R.I., mill where he worked as office manager and plant controller. After his retirement from the mill in 1992, he continued to work part time as gate guard at a lumber yard, a store clerk and a security guard. His most enjoyable jobs in later years were playing Santa Claus for Joy-O-Loons in Westerly, R.I., and his six years at Santa's Workshop in North Pole, N.Y. He was a longtime Eucharistic minister and lecturer at St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Plattsburgh and also at the Immaculate Conception Church in Westerly. He was past commander of a Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Fulton, N.Y., and the American Legion Post in Westerly. He was a long time member of the 40 and 8 Legion in Plattsburgh, a past neighborhood commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, a Cub Scout Round Table commissioner in Oswego County, N.Y., and a past member of the Cumberland Head Fire Department in Plattsburgh. He was also a longtime member and past president of the Surfside Eight Square Dance Club in Westerly. As a member of the Westerly Track Club, he ran eight marathons after the age of 56 including the Boston and Marine Corps Marathons. When he was 63 years old, he was awarded three National Presidential Fitness and Sports Awards from President Bush's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports for his accomplishments in jogging, bicycling and marathon running. Survivors include two children, Lisa Bublitz of Westerly and Robert Bublitz of Westerly; one grandson; one sister, Lydia (Vincent) Thompson of Lewiston, Idaho; one brother, Harland (Donna) Bublitz of Altamont; and two sisters-in-law, Ardella Bublitz of Watertown and Elizabeth LaPier (special friend Roger Sorrell) of Plattsburgh.
