Berneking was born in Germany in 1856 and came to America with his parents when an infant, settling on a farm in Monroe County, Illinois. His father Henry Berneking died when W. Mr. Berneking had a brother, Fred who went as a substitute in the army for their father and died of smallpox at Memphis, Tennessee on the way home after being discharged. W.C. Berneking was married in the autumn of 1883 to Caroline Margaret Pape, a daughter of Henry and Wilhelmena (Moenkhoff) Pape, native of Germany. Her father who had been married twice, died in 1877 and her mother died December 31, 1885. There were five children by the first marriage and eight by the second; a sister Mrs. Sparwasser, living in Cloud County near Glasco; Erstina Gerber and a brother Herman Pape both of Monroe County, Illinois. Mr. Berneking came to the state with six hundred dollars and lived upon rented land seven years. In 1891 he bought the Al Edwards homestead near Simpson. He erected a ten room, two-story 44 by 34 feet framed residence over the course of time. He raises cattle and hogs on a one hundred and sixty acre farm, with a 48 by 60 foot barn and the Solomon River runs through the land. Mr. and Mrs. Berneking have seven children; Louisa age six teen, Lydia, Henry, Mary, George and Catherine the eldest having died in infancy. The family is members of the Lutheran Church in Glasco and Mr. Berneking is a Republican and a member of the Order of Maccabees at Simpson, Lodge No. 67.
