GILCHRIST DIED LAST NIGHT. William Dempsey Gilchrist died last night at his home on South Fifth street last night about eleven o'clock, after a lingering illness of tuberculosis. While his death was not unexpected the end came suddenly and was a shock to his family and friends. Mr. Gilchrist had felt well enough to set up and eat a bit of bread and milk only a few minutes previous to his death. Mr. Gilchrist was well known in Fairfield, having made the city his home for about thirty-five years. For twenty-one years past he has been employed as sexton of the City cemetery only relinquishing that work when ill health compelled him to remain in bed. He was taken seriously ill last July and has not been able to go about his home since. Mr. Gilchrist was about 48 years of age and is survived by his wife and eight children, six of whom are at home. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and the interrment will take place in the cemetery where he was employed for so many years. Gilchrist William Dempsey Gilchrist was born in Pennsylvania, November 5, 1854 and died at his home in Fairfield, Iowa, January 8, 1912, having disease of the heart. He was aged 57 years, two months and three days. He came with his parent to Iowa at eh age of five years and was married to Gertie Slifer at Beemna, Grundy County, IA. This union was blessed with eleven children, five sons and six daughters, two sons and one daughter dying in infancy. He is survived by his companion, three sons and five daughters--Lulu Moore of Hatfield, Mo., Letitia Boyd of Bird City, Kansas, and Laura and Park, Adolph, Ethel, Leslie and Louise and one grandson who reside at home, also an aged mother, three sisters and two brothers. He united with the church of the Bretheren in 1890 and continued faithful until death. He had been afflicted for six months and bore his afflictions with much patience trusting in his Savior. His life since marriage has been spent in Iowa withteh exception of six years in Kansas and the last nineteen years in this city. He had been sexton of Evergreen cemetery since 1900. In his death the wife loses a dear, true companion, the children a loving father and the city a useful and industrious citizen.
